On one of you lessons Kris mentioned that you should mute all the surrounding strings except the one you are playing. How in the world do you do that?? I can see how it would make my playing sound much better but cant figure out how to mute string above and below while letting the middle string ring. Thank you Nick Its not easy, and there are a number of techniques that work well for different people/different techniques - I'll mention a couple: 1. Palm muting - its good practice to keep your plam at the bridge most of the time and use it to mute strings you are not playing - this is essential in sweeps on the way down for instance 2. Left hand fingers - when playing a riff say using the G string, your left hand fingers will naturally cross the B and E strings - its a small step to use this to mute those 2 strings and let the G string ring out 3. Barring - if you want to play the B string and mute the E and G strings for instance, you can play the B string with your middle or ring finger and use your index finger to deaded the other 2 strings behind the finger fretting the B string. There is a great example of this in Pavel's string skipping lesson on the very last note - you can see he is holding the note and applying vibrato, and also deadening the other strings using his index finger 4. Playing cleanly - another way to help with this is to not make the wrong strings ring in the first place by being very accurate with the way you hit the strings with your pick - if you accidentally hit the wrong notes they will of course ring out and you can avoid some of this by practicing accurate picking. You can't avoid string noise entirely this way - moving fingers from one fret to another causes noise for example, but this will give you a head start. Its basically a combination of some or all of these techniques that let you keep strings dead and only playing the note you want to - each situation is different and for me at least this is a work in progress. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile
