Anyone buy an additional guitar and regret it later because it's not worth it?

I have my Ibanez RG350 that I love, but am about to buy a Les Paul like guitar.

Wondering if it's really worth it owning multiple guitars of the same type (Electric, Acoustic, Bass, etc)

GMC, what say you?!

I Say its worth it as long as you like both guitars, i use both for seperate tunings, and i dont regre either purchase, play the guitar you want and make sure you want it, plus, having two guitars just keeps things fresh sometimes smile.gif

I'm probably never gonna replace my guitar. I dont see the point having more than one. Sort if depends though, lets say you buy a rather cheap guitar at first, and then maybe later when you have evolved you want a better one. In my case I bought a really, really good guitar at once. Well, why not, I had saved alot of money. I got my dream guitar, not gonna replace it, unless I get rich.

I'd say it's worh it. I've got several guitars, all with different characteristics, and I use all of them.

I've failed to follow it myself but - Never sell a guitar!!! laugh.gif

I have 7, play them all.

i would not say they are an investment, but they are a store of value, reasonably so. if you get a good price, and take care of them, you can sell them for close to what you paid, so what is the big deal? if you want another buy one. just make sure you get a good deal, if you look around you will find people who paid quite a bit less than the "going" price, that is the price you should look for. if you do that, it is a no brainer, you can't lose much so long as you take care of them. i have not put a scratch on any of mine.

Broken strings are one big reason and a pain among other things that can go wrong with your guitar.

I forget which Murphy's law it is, but: What can go wrong will go wrong.

i sometimes ask myself this question too, but i think its probably because at the end you will only play 1 more than the others. And playing each just because u have them probably isnt necessary and therefor you just settle for 1

I 2nd that. I have 4 different guitars. I mostly just stick with my Ibanez, and my weak Johnson Acoustic. But thats because my other 2 guitars really do suck!!! If you want to a complete guitarist. You need more than 1 guitar. About 7 or so laugh.gif. Its so you can play blues on one guitar. heavy metal on another. Its just another way to give a variety of playability. Because who would really want to play Heavy metal on an acoustic?? It just wouldnt sound right. Each guitar has its own sound. Might be close to another, but it has its own sound, and feel to it!!!

Excuse me, excuse me. I'm sorry, but what do you mean with a complete guitarist? You "need" 7 guitars? I think this sounds rather stuipd, no offence. I play blues, metal, jazz, whatever on my guitar, and it works for everything, very well actually. Of course it can get better, but do you REALLY NEED several guitars to be a "complete" guitarist? I think this sounds crazy, no offence.

Of course, I'm not saying its anything negative with having several guitars, if I were rich I would probably have many myself, but I dont get how its really necessary.

Edit: of course its a difference when it comes to acoustic and electric. I'm talking about several electrics btw.

Ok i really didnt mean 7 its just a guesstimate, but think of it this way. You can play blues, and metal and jazz all on your guitar. Well Which sounds better when its played on that guitar?? If its blues. Well Then theres more of a blues guitar for you, like ibanez is perfect for metal, and shredding, but how good, or cool does it sound. On more of a bluesy guitar? Do you think Malmsteen would as cool with his neoclassical licks without his strat? Each type of guitars, can play anythign dont get me wrong they can, but each type of guitar suits a genre better than the other. Of course you can probably custom build a strat, to make it more into heavy metal, and such. But wha tim getting at is that each guitar has a certain sound to it, better suiting certain genres!! Get what im saying. If not, SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME ON THIS!!

And with the more complete guitarist. Is that if you can only play heavy metal, and cant play any blues or anything. Then thats not a complete guitarist. A complete guitarist In my opinion. Woudl have to be someone that can play a wide variety of genres. Im not going into details but thats one thing that i believe that a guitarist needs to be a "complete guitarist"!!

I think my guitar fits very well for most things. Specially blues and metal. Also jazz. I mean, I dont really find anything "negative" about my guitar sound. But anyway, it is not necessary at all to have several guitars to be a "complete guitarist". As far as I know BB king only use Lucille, havent seen Hendrix using other guitars than strat either. But I see your point, but I still think its totally unecessary to buy several guitars just to be a "complete" guitarist. And of course, different guitars have different sounds, but I find NO problem with playing whatever style I want. Of course its not perfect sound for every style with only one guitar, but is it that necessary? But of course, if you got the money I dont see any problem.
I look at myself as a "complete" guitarist and I'm extremely satisfied with only having one guitar, and I do have a very wide music taste.

I apologize for being a bitch smile.gif

Edit: also, a few adjustments on my guitar, distortion pedal and amp makes a HUGE difference.

Its my opionen lol i cant spell today. and you werent!! If that guitar suits you then so be it. And im just syaing guitars suit different genres better. So if you wanted to play some crazy blues. Get a blues guitar. If you wanted to play some crazy metal. Tnen get a metal guitar (Ibanez) tongue.gif. Thats all im saying!! And i guess i should also add. Im a guitar collector. ONly got 4 guitars but you ahve to start somewhere. By the time im 30 (in 12 years) im hoping ot have around say 50 guitars. I think there beautiful pieces of artwork not only to play, but to just sit and be amazed at them!!

I originally bought a Schecter Omen when I originally started playing. It was a fairly cheap guitar and it had its problems, but it also had an awesome tone and looked really cool and impressed all my friends.

But one day I stopped by the ESP guitar website to check out some axes, in particular one I'd been drooling over for years (the EX-400BD), only to find that that line had been canceled at the beginning of the year. They replaced it with what they call the Static-600, a signature guitar for that guy from Static-X which is virtually identical to the EX except that it only has one pickup and no tone control, and has a static-x logo on it. It sucks if you ask me but I'm rambling.

Point is, I decided to buy the guitar right then, even though I didn't really feel that I was a good enough player to buy a 900 dollar guitar at that point. But I figured it would just get harder to find and more expensive as time went on. It turned out to be a really good decision though, cause I love the sound and look of it and I have a lot more fun playing it than I do with my Omen, which I only rarely play anymore.

I guess my point is that if you think you'll have more fun and be happier playing the guitar you're looking at, then it is definetly worth the money. It was for me anyway.

I guess we're just gonna have to agree to disagree. Just one more thing, I GET YOUR POINT! But! I still dont think its necessary to buy several guitars just to call yourself a "complete" guitarist.

Actually (a sidenote), Hendrix had - and used - a huge number of different guitars - Jazzmaster, Jaguar, Gibson Flying V, Gibson SG, Gretsch, just off the top of my head smile.gif B.B. King has also played just about every guitar in existance - and all the guitars he owned were called Lucille, whether the actual guitar was a Fender, Gretsch or Silverstone - although the Gibson 335 and 355 were probably his favorites.

And you shouldn't. smile.gif If one guitar is good enough for you, then it's all good.

My main reason for having both a Strat and an SG is the differences in tone and playability, which I don't think I can replace by adjusting amp or effects smile.gif The guitarist in our band has 15 or 16 guitars at the moment - almost all of them are in use, and borrows mine when it's needed.
