Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I was thinking the website could really do with a backing track database. Due to the fact that some instructors leave after a while and you cant get the BT of them, so it would be cool if members could do that straight of the site rather than pm'ing or emailing instructors. I understand it would require alot of space, but i feel it would benefit the whole community!! what do you think? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I think that a database is quite needed by us, but the same reasoning for not giving all backingtracks for downloading most probably will apply to the "database idea"...

I think there is a copyright problem with that, but I'm not sure.

I dont think the site itself will benefit from making the backings downloadable, since when You are learning a lessons You actually visiting the site and (hopefully) participate in the forums, chatting and contributing to the community in other ways. And that would be a pity, for at least me enjoying conversating with people, discussing etc. I think the way it works are really good, if You really need a backing that bad, its just some line of text away.... (and there are ways to capture the sound from the audio card in the computer anyhow, cause we just need the backgrounds for rehearsal, right? )

you cant record good quality tracks for the rec programme without A BT so you can then merge the video and audio together.

I think that this is a great idea. Limiting access to paid up members shouldnt be a problem.

I dont understand why copyright is an issue. GMC or the instructors can still hold the copyright, giving member acces to the bt does not compromise this as far as I can see as they are only being used for educational purposes. Should some unscrupulous member try to pass them off as their own for comercial gain then the copyright holder can seek recompense in the usual way. However GMC is a very supportive, open and honest place as far as I can see, so I doubt that that would ever be necessary.

Why not give it a trial run with a limited number of bts to see how it works.

would be a nice feature.

But I think the BT also must be available in the lesson.

With full lesson BT there is a copyright issue so this is only for lesson BT purpose I suppose?

It is true that some instructors cannot provide backing tracks. Possible someone could provide the backings instead of them, this should definitely be doable, because then all GMC lessons could be covered on REC program.

Hmm I don't think downloadable database is great option (copyright, download bots etc). But backing tracks database/search engine could be a great new feature. Then you could type "Blues in A" and get a backing to jam instantly with no need to search individual lessons.

What you proposed Vampire18 is of dubious legality - it may well breach intellectual property right protection and digital copyright laws. It is also against the clear and expressed wishes of GMC both with regards to GMC and to digital media more widely and as such isn't suitable here.

That was exactly what I meant, ... But a search engine for backing tracks had been great...

An advanced jam machine with the possibility to search by key and style has been on our to-do list for a long time.

The new design has been there even longer of course, so we will see that implemented first!

But yes this is definitely something we will see at GMC - in fact all lessons are tagged with scale/key from the very start of GMC - to be able to do exactly this kind of thing smile.gif
