Any opeth fans out there? To me Mikael Akerfeldt is a Riff genious.

He comes out wit hsome of the coolest riffs and 8+ minute songs that haave me on the edge of my seat at times.

Opeth is loved around here >_<

Posted by: Fsgdjv Sep 12 2008, 12:34 AM

Indeed they are

Posted by: The Uncreator Sep 12 2008, 12:50 AM

Yes, Opeth has much love around here, As they should smile.gif

They used to be good for the first 4 albums until that muppet from Porcupine Tree got hold of their songs. Now they sound as pop as the Spice Girls. The last album was dire. Sends me to sleep. I'd rather listen to static on my TV.

But that's just my opinion. Much better music out there than the Opeth yawnfest

Posted by: jer Sep 12 2008, 04:42 PM

Opeth = awesome

The "Damnation" album is in my top 10 of all time.

Posted by: opeth.db Sep 12 2008, 07:51 PM

Id have to say "Blackwater Park" would be mine.

No yawnfest there...

Posted by: VinceG Sep 12 2008, 08:18 PM

I only like Opeth from Orchid to maybe Still Life. The rest is a snorefest for me.

Posted by: Mark. Sep 12 2008, 08:58 PM

Opeth is awsome I like all of their albums !

Posted by: Raw Sep 14 2008, 02:09 AM

Opeth is awesome, there is no other band like it. Favorite album is probably either Blackwater Park (best coverart ever), Deliverence or Ghost Reveries.

Posted by: jer Dec 17 2008, 03:09 PM

A guy I know recently described Opeth as:

Pink Floyd plus The Devil.

That's strangely accurate.

Awesome. lol tongue.gif

Posted by: Chokehold Dec 17 2008, 04:23 PM

just started listening to them, but only got watershed but i thinks it's really good smile.gif

Posted by: gibsonmatte Dec 17 2008, 04:30 PM

Opeth, along with Carcass, is what got me into Death metal and I have been "true" to them ever since.

However I must admit that I was a little disappointed regarding Watershed but that's probably due to the abnormal expectations I had for this album.
Ok, it's a great album but it would be an direct illegal act to compare Watershed to Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation or Ghost Reveries smile.gif

Anyone else who shares my point of view in this?

I dont really compare albums. To me they are all different enough to warrant a status of that they are all good.
But my favorite has to be Blackwater Park with Watershed a close behind.

Posted by: jer Dec 17 2008, 04:36 PM

Its hard not to think that Watershed is more "accessible" to new Opeth fans.

But thats how you grow your fan base. A sell out? Absolutely no. Thats the cool thing about them, they are a versitile band.

I like them all. I'd really like to hear the older stuff redone with todays tones.

That would be killer... cool.gif

Posted by: gibsonmatte Dec 17 2008, 04:47 PM

Don't get me wrong guys. Opeth isn't a sell out band in anyway and I agree with you that it could be hard to compare albums but for me Watershed was almost like... Can't think of any other good examples. To even mention Chinese Democracy in this topic is a crime in itself but I guess my expectations were a little too high for this one as well.

I tried to explain myself but it didn't work I see now smile.gif I'll let this be now and simply conclude that OPETH KICKS A**!!!

Posted by: jer Dec 17 2008, 05:26 PM

I follow ya 100%. I wasnt trying to say you thought they sold out.

Some would though based on some of the music being a big move towards "accessible". Especially with the video for "Burden".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5BoMiEo7z0

It is a big change for them. They've had softer songs with clean vocals before. Even on heavier albums. But Burden and Coil especially sound much more polished and like they are aimed at capturing a wider audience.

They are diverse enough to be able to pull it off without die hard fans going "WTF is this?????"

I totally agree!

I find it hard with opeth. It's one of those bands whom, when looking at all the other I listen to really should top ny list but doesn't. I think the main thing is I never really liked death or "metal metal". Anyway, I've seen them live twice (at festivals) and I gotta say they're extremely talented musicians. But thing still is, their music never gets to me...

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opeth

QUOTE
When news leaked that the band was signed to Roadrunner, who predominantly worked with trend-oriented rock and metal, some fans accused the band of selling out. "To be honest", Ã…kerfeldt said, "that's such an insult after 15 years as a band and 8 records. I can't believe we haven't earned each and every Opeth fan's credibility after all these years. I mean, our songs are 10 minutes long!"

And they've been playing for 18 years now.

Not pointing any fingers, but I just read that article and found the quote suiting for the thread.

Posted by: Fsgdjv Dec 18 2008, 12:34 AM

Wow, I can't believe you are calling Watershed more accessible then for example Ghost Reveries. Imo Ghost Reveries is by far the most accessible and polished Opeth record. I happen to love polished albums so it's all good. But Watershed is less accessible than Blackwater Park for me. Accessibillity for me is not something that has to do with what kind of vocals there are etc, but more about how the songs are built.

Also, watershed is amazing. Maybe not the best release this year, but still amazing.

I find that last sentence to be quite weird to be honest. It doesn't matter if your song is 30 seconds or 10 minutes long, its how you attract and keep the balance of the song to the listener. For instance, Vital Remains makes very long songs, but there quite boring. I think, so what Akerfeldt if your songs are still 10 minutes long, ITS JUST BORING compared to your older songs that are more thought out.

Posted by: The Uncreator Dec 18 2008, 03:49 AM

I think he was making a joke.

And Vital Remains is awesome smile.gif

Posted by: VinceG Dec 18 2008, 04:20 AM

They are, there older stuff at least. Icons of Evil wasn't bad, but would be better if they trimmed it down by 15 minutes haha.

Posted by: The Uncreator Dec 18 2008, 04:24 AM

I think I can see what you mean, Although I like Icons Of Evil more than Dechristianize, BUT, Dechristianize is my favorite song by them.

I'm pretty new to Opeth, great band!

My favorites are My Arms, Your Hearse, Orchid and Blackwater Park.

The whole Prog metal scene is something I only started getting into over the last year and a half...I've been into Mastadon somewhat, but that's about it. All that stuff sounded so weird to me. Took some time for me to understand and appreciate.

Posted by: Smikey2006 Dec 19 2008, 09:57 AM

Opeth is my alltime favorite band.. the closest thing to them for me is Daylight Dies and they aren't half as amazing.. people say steve wilson ruined opeth.. but as a porcupine tree and blackfield fan i think it made opeth better.. polished albums too me are better than wanna be good albums that just don't hit the mark. I really loved Ghost Reveries and i really love watershed. Roadrunner is doing a great job with opeth just like Dream Theater and Constant Motion biggrin.gif. Sorry another album that really comes close to opeth albums with me is Colours by Between the Buried and me and live they put on almost as good a show as Opeth. But Opeth is just top cheese as far as melodic death metal goes in my books smile.gif

I saw Opeth, Dream Theatre and Between the Buried and Me on the same bill this past summer smile.gif

Posted by: The Uncreator Dec 20 2008, 03:52 PM

As did I, I saw them on Progressive Nation a few months back, It was a fantastic show, One of the best performances from every band.

Posted by: Paiva Dec 26 2008, 03:34 PM

Love them! Damnation is great probably buying watershed. I'm more fan of the softer stuff but for christmas i got Thee Candlelight Years that has the first 3 albuns they are awesome too.
