GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Girlfriends And Guitars...

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Feb 22 2008, 09:19 AM

I've been thinking about my relationship with my girlfriend and my guitar... hehe, she (my girl) is always saying me that I spend more time with my JEM than with she... and that's true... In fact I think I spend almost the double time with my guitar so sometimes she is sad and angry about this situation. I'm terribly sorry but I love music and I work in music so I NEED to play almost all day, and I don't know how to explain it to my girlfriend...

some got the same problem?? how can you do a normal life with girlfriend and guitar ?? Do you think I'm crazy ??? (probably yes laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif)

Now you know why i don't have a G/F. I don't even have time for myself to do all i want to do, so G/F would too time consuming biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I had to choose between dating a girl and my guitar, and I told her I was too busy to dating. If it was someone I really liked I would find the time for her, but untill (or if) I do my guitar and studies get the best of me.

But guess who gets the rest of me? laugh.gif laugh.gif (sorry for qouting a Sophie Elis Bextor song there) wink.gif unsure.gif

Haha Juan, i know exactly what you mean ..!! when i had a girlfriend 2 years ago she played guitar too .. so i think i was a bit lucky with that because she did understand it (littlebit), but if i picked up the guitar when i was with her, it was always .. YOU DONT HAVE TIME FOR MEEEE, AND YOU KEEP PLAYINGGG bleeeeeeee sad.gif so girls dont understand it after all, hahahaha.

Difficult Juan.. i dont know a solution so they can understand it ..

Looks like I have some luck in that topic,
my girlfriend understands my connection with guitar pretty well,no complaint at all.
Tho she doesn't understand me in some other matters but that's life I guess. biggrin.gif

Pretty much the same here, the only time I may get a complaint is at the weekends (daytime) if I want to do some recording etc, so as shes pretty good about it all the other times I guess I can compromise at the weekends smile.gif

Posted by: Tomotoms Feb 22 2008, 11:34 AM

Try writting some songs for your gf, she won't complain then. smile.gif

Last girlfriend i had would sometimes really get mad at me, because she would call at 1pm, id be playing, call back at 6pm, and id still be there in the same spot laugh.gif

Also, its like all i ever think about smile.gif

Posted by: Milenkovic Ivan Feb 22 2008, 01:07 PM

My girl also wants me to write her songs! smile.gif

Don't worry Juan, just try to talk as much as you can with your girl on the subject, and try to explain why you like your music and why you spend so much time with your guitar.

Off course, occasional flowers or a small present can do wonders wink.gif

With my last girlfriend I said to her that I really was to busy with music to have a girlfriend. She said that wouldn't be a problem, that she understood me. It went a week before she broke up tongue.gif I guess it all comes down to priorities.

Music is your job now, right? Then playing guitar is just the same as if you went into work for eight hours. wink.gif

Posted by: Goliath Feb 22 2008, 05:02 PM

When you do spend time with her just make her feel really special and make sure she knows that when you're with her, you're 100% with her, but when you're playing your guitar, you need your space since it is now your profession and she needs to understand/respect that. Best solution I have for you, and it's not a very good one tongue.gif

Posted by: Duncan Feb 22 2008, 07:05 PM

With all my girlfriends in the past, I've never had any trouble balancing them with guitar practise. I used to go out most evenings anyway so that was always perfect time to be spent with them. Then a few times during the day just don't play as much. It isn't really that hard.

A girlfriend I had a couple of years ago did break up with me because I used to play guitar more than I was with her. With my last girlfriend I didn't have any problems , but she always told to me to learn tropical music , here are a couple of examples of what she wanted me to learn:

This kind of music is the most popular in the Discos here in Bogota. So.....

I had one girlfriend who wanted me to write her song, so as a joke, I tuned my guitar to B Standard (i think you can see where this is going), and just played some really fast galloping death metal riffs laugh.gif

Posted by: MickeM Feb 22 2008, 08:32 PM

I don't have time for girlfriends. Wife, kids and guitarplaying is more than enough to keep my schedule full. wink.gif

Awesome man , it would be great if we could hear that song.

I did write a song for my ex girlfriend, and when she heard it she told me she didn't want any songs from hell , that she wanted I really nice tropical song (view my last post).

Posted by: The Uncreator Feb 22 2008, 08:35 PM

It was just Improv really laugh.gif

I think i ended up playing a few riffs from Amon Amarth's Pursuit Of Vikings though ph34r.gif

I'll usually play my classical guitar for the ladies...but every once in while I can't help but play some really heavy riff or shreddy solo. It's actually impressed a few, surprisingly ohmy.gif

She didnt have much of a sense of humour, Thing was though, she once asked me to play a slow solo, so i did some Blind Guardian/ Rhapsody of Fire type stuff, and she is like "That is just weird"

No pleasing her i tell ya!

this can be solved by putting your phone on loud speakers so you can still hear her and go "mm hmm" at the appropriate moments, coz she doesnt really want u to talk, she just want u to listen

A man should never be enslaved by any woman ...
Some women will try to manipulate you to think that you need them, "or else" - truth is - if thats the case - then she dont really love you, and you will loose your mind in the end ... so chose wisely ... Do what YOU love man and be honest about it. My girlfriend doesn't mind at all if I spend half my time playing the guitar, as most of the time shes drawing or painting something as shes in art college and is also an aspiring illustrater/manga artist. When I was bored the other day I started playing scales and sweeps with the delay up full trying to annoy her, but instead she started recording it saying it would make a great backing track for some animations she was working on! laugh.gif (you know those weird arty ones that make no sense! tongue.gif )

Mine does not have problems because of me playing..I practice in my free time, also I go to a lot of gigs that take a lot of time..But its cool with her.. wink.gif

Ahhh relationships....you'll never win boys smile.gif tongue.gif laugh.gif Just kidding.....kind of wink.gif laugh.gif

But seriously I have to agree with Twibeard about not being enslaved....by either men or women. It's just not healthy and will only lead to problems down the road. I'm all for spending as much time with your signifigant other but you need your own time too. I know tons of women and men who get all bent out of shape when their partner is doing something without them or is spending to much time at something. I say as long as they aren't spending all their time with someone else it's all good. This is your time to find something that you like doing on your own.....if you don't like being alone well you have bigger problems and I can't help you. tongue.gif

My boyfriend is big into dirt bikes and skidoos. I use to refer to myself as a "motorcycle/skidoo widow" actually as he's gone on bike all summer and on skidoo all winter. Now I'll be honest at first I was a bit mad as he was gone all the time, but then I realized this was something he loved to do and I loved him so I was just gonna have to deal. With this I figured it was either find a hobby or a second boyfriend...I chose a hobby....less messy and not so complicated smile.gif I bought a guitar and started to learn how to play during the time he was out riding. It worked out perfect. I bought a skidoo last year as well so now we have a mutual interest....couples who play together stay together right?
