GMC Forum _ Theory (David) _ Problems Keeping Time

Posted by: lee Mar 23 2008, 10:54 PM

Hi David

I'm having problems keeping time within a song.I unerstand the metronome lesson, but
can't seem to apply that to a song. Most songs i attemt to play are common time, and not that fast.
Should i count four beats per measure or individual notes like in the metronome lesson? In other
words what is the proper way to keep time in a song vs a metronome exercise?PLEASE HELP

That's a great question.
To start out, I would make sure that you understand how time division works...
Start slow with a metronome and play quarter notes (1 note per beat).
Then divide that in 2 notes per beat (eights)...
Keep dividing and work with single notes just to get a strong right hand feel.

Once you are comfortable with the basic divisions, write little rhythm patterns to reproduce on a single note. Try to combine several note values in there.

Let me know if that helps!
