As you probably noticed, most "Pro" and many semi pro production studios have at least 2 sets of audio monitors. Most pro shops have at least 3 sets. The BIG ones built in to the wall, a pair of near field and a pair of "crap" (auratone/etc.). That way, one can test a mix on a variety of systems to see how it will "travel". Sadly, in most home studios, only ONE pair of audio monitors is common. This prevents the user from seeing how a mix might travel by trying it out on a crappier or nicer set of monitors. Instead, we typically do everything on one set of near field monitors, typically with a 6 inch woofer. As a result, we often have no idea what is happening in the low bass area, for example.

I"ve decided to add a second pair of near field monitors to my mixing station. These will be the "CRAP" speakers that are meant to show what a mix will sound like on a very limited playback system. I HATE the auratone (horror tone) speakers as they give me a migraine headache as soon as they come on. So I searched long and hard and came up with these. I looked at several sets and best of all these are $99 a pair! Also, they got much better reviews than anything else in that price range.

THE PRESONUS ERIS E3.5 MONITORS

These are studio quality monitors for the price of decent computer speakers. I looked at the MACKIE in this price range and people HATE them for mixing as they are just not flat enough. The "iLoud" had the same problem. Just not flat enough to trust for mixing work. Your choices are slim when looking for studio monitors under a hundred a pair, but these fit the bill.

QUESTION: ANYONE ACTUALLY HEARD OR TRIED THESE BEFORE?

This bloke looked at all the same monitors I looked at and even looked at the KALI (which I love) and still ended up giving the ERIS the #1 spot.

So what were my "Crap" monitors in my previous setup? Here they are. The infamous LOGITECH 2.1 craptastical computer monitors.

I haven't listened to presonus monitors but these days DSP enhanced monitos are becoming a thing.

It's not room correction but helps the monitor to sound ridiculously flat for the price. I was skeptical till I listened an Adam T7V, impressed to be honest. I was expecting negative digital-related negative tone qualities but that wasn't the case at all. Maybe dynamics was a bit limited but for the price thats expected.

More expensive but I've been reading good reviews from these from people I trust(also DSP enhanced). They are small but doesn't aim for the role of crappy speakers.

Those monitors you mentioned are $300 a pair which is in the "budget range" but also the same price as the KALI AUDIO LP6 which are darn good monitors. I would like to hear a set of the FLUID monitors as I keep reading good things about them. I have yet to find anyone who has a pair in their home studio though. I've not seen them in guitar center in the speaker room, etc. I suppose it will just take time smile.gif Yeah, these are not the "crap" auratone/horrortone monitors that are meant to show what playback on a bad rig will sound like. The new version of the auratone are actually pricier than I expected.

You've probably seen auratone monitors in pictures of pro studios around the world, especially if the studio has been around for a while, they will also have a pair of NS10M and a set of mains mounted in the walls. This gives 3 sets of playback devices and covers most things which is why the configuration is so common in pro studios.

They stopped making auratones for a while, but they started up again and now the new versions cost about $300 a pair. They still sound a bit crap, but they are sorta supposed to sound just a bit crap smile.gif All joking aside, they do focus on the mid range which is always important in working to get good vocals/guitar/etc.

I sold my KRK once I heard the KALI AUDIO LP6. But there are still wads of folks who love the yellow cones smile.gif

Guitarcenter link gave me a different currency so I messed-up the math smile.gif

I have a DVD system from my parents collecting dust, they were thinking of throwing to the trash smile.gif I've yet to get a cable (blame covid) to route from my headphone-out from soundcard to the player (io's on it is very limited). From memory it could go quite loud with not so bad bass despite having no subwoffer, thought while sketching use it instead of the monitors to increase their amps life-span. I'm in no rush but do want to try them sometime.

BTW I checked ebay and saw 1-2 ns10m pairs for 250 dollars, if owning ns10m+modern monitors then even in studios they use auratone very rare. That at-least would be my approach.

You may be looking at the NS10 MM which is a "mini" ns10 and not used much in studios. There aren't any buy it now NS10m monitors under $500 on ebay that I can see. Share a link if you do find a price that good!

lol strike 2 from me as they turned out to be from Japan biggrin.gif

I looked at sweetwater as it doesn't convert currencies or anything and the options do look a bit limited. The Eris has the most comments which is a good indicator but when thinking about this, if its really that flat won't it turn-out to be a monitor only having less bass and maybe mid detail than your current monitors? (you're currently using Kali or EVE I forgot?)

I have a pair of the 'Fluid Audio' FX50s ($300 US). It's another company started by an ex JBL guy, like Kali.
A friend of mine, up until recently, owned an audiophile shop and I got a closeout pair from him. I was using them as stereo speakers with my turntable (via a phono preamp) laugh.gif
Now that I'm recording at home the Fluids have been re-purposed back to their original purpose - monitors.
They sound great to me but this is my first pair of near-field monitor speakers actually being used as monitors in a recording environment. I'm also not doing any mixing. I just need to be able hear stuff relatively flat and clean. Between these and decent pair of headphones I've been getting good results.
The Fluids are are also pretty compact as they are coaxial. They fit perfectly in my space.

*I almost popped for a pair of the Kalis via Todds suggestion but I had these already and I really needed a decent LDC mic.

Glad you liked them, I'm not in the market for monitors but curious to hear those myself one day cause of the coaxial design.
