Series Request: Shred! Options

Maybe we don' t even have to make new lessons but just put some in order;)

Vid 1 explains like the basics of it...
Vid 2 to 4 or something excersises which go up in speed slowely.
And the last one to be like a shred/song which uses the patterns played before.

Please, If this happens, put some metronome settings in the GMC lesson text part. I struggle to get the right tempo' s!

There are TONS of shred lessons on GMC. I would suggest any of Muris's serial lessons where he does a beginner, intermediate and advanced lesson over the same backing track. I am working on the Lydian one right now. Jose, Marcus and Emir also have some AWESOME shred lessons as well. Good luck and just take all of these lessons slowly and you will get it with hard work and patience!!

Shred isn't a single technique IMO - its a whole series of techniques played in a certain way!

A video like this would be interesting though - but as a jumping off point. It would be cool to build a main vid that uses 4 or 5 of the most common techniques - Alt Picking, Economy Picking, Sweeping, Tapping, 3nps scales, and then devote an individual vid to explaining what each one actually is, then providing a list of suggested lessons to work on that technique.

That way, a less experienced player could get a feel for the work ahead, and pick an area to focus on.

You know I was thinking the same thing, I've done a few shred lessons, but I was thinking of doing a series of lessons on shredding techniques, but it is quite hard to organize. I was planning on doing it how I learned, started with simple licks that get you started playing fast, and every new lesson will talk about another technique getting more difficult. The problem is that sometimes practicing exercises over and over is boring, and it is much more fun to learn a solo that includes some shred. So it would be kind of hard to organize the lessons in a way that they are fun, simple, and helpful at the same time.

I would like the opinion of the other shred instructors here, it seems to me that it is a good idea to concentrate a lesson on a single technique, but at the same time it has to be enough to make a lesson and make it fun (seems like a real challenge).

As long as the technique was one that wasn't boring to practice, and sounds cool, then there's no problem.

I hate practicing techniques that can't be worked into an improvisation unless you apply them to something else that has to be learned.

Yes, I agree. That is the real challenge. Exercise lessons are OK, but you get bored quickly if the exercise does not sound musical and melodic. But at the same time, anyone wanting to shred will have to go understand that amazing shred only comes from countless practicing hours. To me there is no point in playing fast if it doesn't sound clean and accurate, and for this some hours of boring exercises might be needed.

If there is a way of taking a single shred technique, and doing a 30 second workout with this technique only that sounds melodic at the same time, the task will be accomplished, but at the same time, some techniques might be boring to practice. For instance 4 notes per string chromatics, this is simple, but I don't know if it is worth doing a whole lesson about it, because the concept is really simple, not very musical, however a great workout that can be used in some occasions to shred, I've included short chromatic runs in my lessons, to do them I practiced chromatics the boring and not fun way, and later applied to my solos.

This isn't rocketscience at all. Just gotta be determined and use it in one's jamming. sure, you gotta do it all the time, but that's the only way not to get sick and tired of learning it.

I think it is a good idea but like Jose said it will be tricky to organize. I still think the best way to do it is just tackle any of the "shred" instructors lessons. Jose, Muris, Emir etc all have great lessons and most of them use every shred technique in the book. I know from my experience I wanted to learn to shred from the minute I started playing guitar. So for years all I did was play excercises, mostly legato and tapping which is why those techniques are way ahead of my picking chops. The problem with that was at the end of the day if somebody asked me to play something all I could do was play excercises You can take any of the shred type lessons and dissect them into shred excercises. Then at the end of the day you have learned an excercise that can be applied to a tune right away. Also gives you motivation to keep working on the "excercises". Just my two cents.

Personally I don't really get motivated by listening to dry exercises in a lesson, instead, I practiced for hours just to get a bit closer to a more faster and melodic part in a solo, or to keep up with a fast passage that was only a few bars but created tension in my favorite solos (mostly GMC lessons) .

I think there are many shred stuff here (HIGH quality ones), however, a basic "introduction to shred" lesson would be nice, to summarize the basic ideas of where to start and also to give samples of what to achieve.

This can be a very cool series..There are so many lessons here on that subject , we just need to make an order and choose them carefully to be suited in a course form.From easy to more advanced techniques involved but in a pattern where lessons relate one to the next one..
