GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Creativity Workout 2

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Jul 20 2015, 03:56 PM

Hello friends!

I have decided to start the Creativity Workout II. Some of the old students maybe remember that we've already done this experiment in the past with great results. Based on the success of the Creativity Workout 1, I decided to relive this one too.....

In this one, the experiment consists of connecting melodic lines over a backing track that I will share here.
In other words, this means that we'll be creating a song together.

It will be very interesting to listen to melodies we create by connecting guitar lines and being influenced by each other yet still adding our own style along the way. I think that his experiment will make it a rich learning experience for everybody.

Besides the backing track I will also provide a word or phrase that reflects the feeling that we would like to convey while creating the melodies.

This will hopefully inspire us to go with our composing ideas even deeper and I’m sure that the results will influence everyone.

How does this work?

1. I share a backing track and a word which reflects a feeling.

2. The first participant (A) downloads the backing, records a 2 or 4 measures melody or arrangement (or both) over it and uploads an audio with the whole backing and his take. (please share an only guitar file for future mixing)

2. The next participant (B ) downloads participant's (A) file and records a 2 measures melody next to (B )’s take.

3. Participant ( C ) downloads (B )’s file and does the same.

4. We keep building the tune by extending lines and melodic ideas together

Some rules and suggestions:

- The melodies / arrangement should last 2 or 4 measures and can be created with guitar, vocals or other instruments.

- I will give 10 days to play each backing until we discuss the result and start with a new one.

- Remember to allow downloads If you use Soundcloud.

- Save original files in your computer! We might want to re-mix it later.

- Please upload a file that only contains your guitar to let me do experiments.

- Don’t be shy. This workout is appropriate for all levels: BEGINNERS, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED.

- Feel free to contact me if you need help with recording, mix down and uploading the files.

BACKING I

This is the backing that we'll use:  Beginner_Spring_Tune_Rock_Ballad_backing_track.mp3 ( 2.42MB ) : 171

It's in D major, and I borrowed it from this amazing lesson: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginner-Spring-Tune/

Nice entry mate! I like how this one is turning out! I'll extend backing if it's necessary. Please allow downloads on your soundcloud take to let the next student download your take to record. Also if there is a possibility to put your guitar a bit louder in the mix, it would be create.

It shouldn't be full if we're only 3 and have played 2-4 meassures each. Maybe there's a misunderstanding somewhere.

Hi mate, it's not full, you could start your phrase at 00:47. The lines that appear there are part of the backing, just background melodies.
By the way I'll extend this backing when it's completed.

Posted by: MisterM Jul 27 2015, 07:22 AM

Hi Gab

the melody 0:47 is very beautifull, i don't want playing on.
I'll wait a new extended backing track wink.gif

Is it the full backing that I shared with your take included there? Do you have a soundcloud account to make the plays and downloads easier?

Has the guidelines changed so people can play for longer? Cause now I'm starting to wonder if I should have played longer than 2 bars.

Where do you mix both the backing and your guitar?

In Reaper

This should be related to the volume of the tracks before you export them, before the mix down. I don't think that you have to re-record this. You have to export it again with lower levels.

Posted by: Phil66 Aug 11 2015, 08:15 PM

Gab,

I have looked at it and I can't see how to make it better. There was some weird harmonic type sounds coming from the area circled in red but as you can see it isn't clipping, at least with my limited knowledge it isn't. The sound is like when you flick the whammy bar but it is a faster frequency than when you do that but a similar effect.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 12 2015, 02:03 PM

Hi mate, the problem is not your guitar, it's the whole mix. If you play the mix that you've shared here, as soon as the first solo appears, the overall mix sounds clipped. Check this image, and notice where I think is the problem:

Posted by: Phil66 Aug 12 2015, 09:31 PM

Thanks Gab,

Here's another go, I think I could see what was wrong when you pointed it out, I wasn't looking there rolleyes.gif .

Great! It sounds good now! There is always something new to learn.

Ok guys, the mix is ready for a new brave player! Who is in??

Posted by: Ricky9 Aug 17 2015, 05:31 AM

Is there a way we can get a different track that is actually longer to play along, and not just something so short. It will be great, since it seems like a lot of confusion here with this track, we should start with something fresh. Please let me know what you think.

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Aug 18 2015, 03:20 PM

Hi Ricky, thanks for your post. Ok, let's start with a new one to see if we can go smoothly.

This is the new backing!

 Creativity_II___Track_2.mp3 ( 10.44MB ) : 89

The backing has basically 3 sections that are looped: First we have an intro, then we have the verse, the pre-chorus and the chorus. The intro only appears the first time, then the loop connects to verse again.

Key: C major

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator

Here you can check the backing track chords:  Creativity_II___Track_2.gp5 ( 12.59K ) : 74

Just some theory behind the tune for intermediate players:
You can use C major to improvise over this one, but it's good to have in mind that the tune modulates to Am in the pre-chorus (at 00:45). C major scale and A minor scale have the same notes because both are relative scales. But the problem is that I use E major scale in the pre-chorus. This generates that the better scale you can use there is A harmonic minor scale. The problem appears only when E chord is played.

Hi Guys,

I think I 've found something interesting. I am sending a preview so the next person can start working on it until I send the final polished version and the guitar file for the mixing. Hopefully tomorrow should be fine.

P.S. As you can tell something is producing this cable like noise and I can't get rid of it. I am using cubase 5 and the guitar cable is new.

Let me know on any comments.

Hi Aris! Great to know that you are working on this one! I think that the idea is very promising. When recording the last version, please remember these details

- Be careful with timing
- Don't mix your guitar too loud in the mix.
- That last note... it's not bad but a more conclusive note could sound better, don't you think so?

Posted by: fzalfa Aug 31 2015, 09:55 AM

Gabriel is right, too loud, timing...

can you use the Soudcloud marker to ingrate it in the post ?

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Sep 14 2015, 12:55 PM

Ok guys! So the spot is open again, who want to continue this one? (You can repeat here if there is another take after yours)

I deeply apologize for disappearing like this.

I had to take vacations from work earlier than planned so I had no chance of recording while I was away. I tried to make some time but it was impossible. The schedule was full and vacation days were too short.

Anyway i m back now. In case nobody has recorded this spot yet, here is my second improved take. let me know if you will need any further corrections and I will do my best to short them out very shortly this time.

@Laurent: I don't know this feature you mentioned in soundcloud. Perhaps you could give me some more guidance on how to find it.

Aris, you need to make your Soundcloud downloadable so that I can add my take after yours!
Thanks mate!!

Great to hear from you Aris!! Thanks for your take! Please allow downloads on Soundcloud or upload your files here at the forum.

This tune is turning really cool, very catchy playing guys!

Cool!!! Very happy news.
I stayed up to rehearse and record it when I saw the post late at night. Thank you for the waiting guys!!!

Download is enabled now, I thought marking the tracks as public was enough.

By the way, my Cubase has started to fail and too often the sound collapses while recording. This is why you can hear this trembling noise at the end of the above take. Perhaps I can overdub that last note. I will check how it sounds.

In any case I wont mind if Gabriel does the mixing with the file I have already sent to avoid the waiting time.

Ok, here I remixed the track with Aris take without the last noise. It's ready for the next participant! Who would like to continue with this?
