Hello friends!
I have decided to start the Creativity Workout II. Some of the old students maybe remember that we've already done this experiment in the past with great results. Based on the success of the Creativity Workout 1, I decided to relive this one too.....
In this one, the experiment consists of connecting melodic lines over a backing track that I will share here.
In other words, this means that we'll be creating a song together.
It will be very interesting to listen to melodies we create by connecting guitar lines and being influenced by each other yet still adding our own style along the way. I think that his experiment will make it a rich learning experience for everybody.
Besides the backing track I will also provide a word or phrase that reflects the feeling that we would like to convey while creating the melodies.
This will hopefully inspire us to go with our composing ideas even deeper and I’m sure that the results will influence everyone.
How does this work?
1. I share a backing track and a word which reflects a feeling.
2. The first participant (A) downloads the backing, records a 2 or 4 measures melody or arrangement (or both) over it and uploads an audio with the whole backing and his take. (please share an only guitar file for future mixing)
2. The next participant (B ) downloads participant's (A) file and records a 2 measures melody next to (B )’s take.
3. Participant ( C ) downloads (B )’s file and does the same.
4. We keep building the tune by extending lines and melodic ideas together
Some rules and suggestions:
- The melodies / arrangement should last 2 or 4 measures and can be created with guitar, vocals or other instruments.
- I will give 10 days to play each backing until we discuss the result and start with a new one.
- Remember to allow downloads If you use Soundcloud.
- Save original files in your computer! We might want to re-mix it later.
- Please upload a file that only contains your guitar to let me do experiments.
- Don’t be shy. This workout is appropriate for all levels: BEGINNERS, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED.
- Feel free to contact me if you need help with recording, mix down and uploading the files.

Hi Gab, Fzalfa, Ricky9, Caelumamittendum
Too late or not too late for a take, The BT is full ?
Hi Gab
the melody 0:47 is very beautifull, i don't want playing on.
I'll wait a new extended backing track
Ok, so this is the extended version! Let's continue with this one:
Creativity_II___Srping_tune___Extended.mp3 ( 4.98MB )
: 100
Hi Gab,
I worked above this morning.
I found a melody but I prefer to polish it, I shall post on-line soon.
Hi GMC collab
Here my take : http://sd-6.archive-host.com/membres/playlist/4d6aad6c63636c29f89648332634794be1fb0e49/GMC/Collab_Gab.mp3
I hope to have understood the guidelines
I'm not being able to download it, I don't know why.
Is it the full backing that I shared with your take included there? Do you have a soundcloud account to make the plays and downloads easier?
Has the guidelines changed so people can play for longer? Cause now I'm starting to wonder if I should have played longer than 2 bars.
Hey guys! This one is really slow...
Is it the backing that doesn't inspire you?
Rick, you have stolen my question !
Laurent
yes! you can.
Hello, I've probably done this all wrong but here goes anyway, please advise if incorrect. It's not good anyway but we can build on it

Thanks Gab,
I had removed it but must have used wrong file. I'll post it later
Correct thread now Gab

Hi Phil, I noticed that your audio mix sounds clipped, it seems that the output was a bit high. Is it possible to fix it?
Thanks Gab,
Can I do that without re-recording it? I ran it through Amplitube
Cheers
In Reaper
Gab,
I have looked at it and I can't see how to make it better. There was some weird harmonic type sounds coming from the area circled in red but as you can see it isn't clipping, at least with my limited knowledge it isn't. The sound is like when you flick the whammy bar but it is a faster frequency than when you do that but a similar effect.

Hi mate, the problem is not your guitar, it's the whole mix. If you play the mix that you've shared here, as soon as the first solo appears, the overall mix sounds clipped. Check this image, and notice where I think is the problem:
Thanks Gab,
Here's another go, I think I could see what was wrong when you pointed it out, I wasn't looking there .

[attachment=42687:Spring_L...tar_only.wav]
Cheers
Great! It sounds good now! There is always something new to learn.
Ok guys, the mix is ready for a new brave player! Who is in??
Is there a way we can get a different track that is actually longer to play along, and not just something so short. It will be great, since it seems like a lot of confusion here with this track, we should start with something fresh. Please let me know what you think.
Hi Ricky, thanks for your post. Ok, let's start with a new one to see if we can go smoothly.
This is the new backing!
Creativity_II___Track_2.mp3 ( 10.44MB )
: 89
The backing has basically 3 sections that are looped: First we have an intro, then we have the verse, the pre-chorus and the chorus. The intro only appears the first time, then the loop connects to verse again.
Key: C major
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/scalegenerator
Here you can check the backing track chords:
Creativity_II___Track_2.gp5 ( 12.59K )
: 74
Just some theory behind the tune for intermediate players:
You can use C major to improvise over this one, but it's good to have in mind that the tune modulates to Am in the pre-chorus (at 00:45). C major scale and A minor scale have the same notes because both are relative scales. But the problem is that I use E major scale in the pre-chorus. This generates that the better scale you can use there is A harmonic minor scale. The problem appears only when E chord is played.
I'm on mate !
Laurent
as i have listen i'm on the way to cover all the track
think can do something really nice !
how many mesure did we do each other ?
Laurent
Hi
i finaly decide to do the whole, i have cut down some part, useless or not at my taste.
on this track i have try and experiment my expression pedal (volume to be short) i do not master it , but it's promising, i really love howi can make cry some notes, and the overall control !!
tell me what do you think about this, i'll polish it tomorow, or this night
https://soundcloud.com/maxime-bon-3/creativity-ii-3
Laurent
Nice playing Laurent!!!!. But i am confused again. Are we supposed to jam for the whole song? or just do some parts? Please Gab clarify this.
Hi here
a new release with new ideas, at the end i do a lot of mistake (at 4:30 till the end) because my son was get up and he take my arm to kept my attention, not easy to play with a 23kg child at your arm
https://soundcloud.com/maxime-bon-3/creativity-ii-4
Laurent
We have problems again here! Laurent's playing is really nice on this one but again, the original idea of this workout is to build a song together (as it says on the first post), so it would be good to record short phrases each of us (around 4 measures) and let the next GMCer continue...
does it make sense?
yes of course, we (me and ricky) have ask the some question about.......
i'll do some mesure, the intro ?
Laurent
i'll do the intro today or tomorow in the morning
Laurent
Hi here
This is my take , the intro from 0:00 to 44:00
if something seem wrong, tell me i'll change it
you can download both format, one MP3 from soundclound, and a uncompressed wave from the link below

Laurent
Excellent Laurent! Thanks for your take. I like this use of volume as an expressive tool. It always remind me to some killer guitar works of Slash on the song Estranged.
Now we are ready for a new phrase just after this one, who is next?
estranger , very very nice tune !!!! slash is really a great soloist
maybe, i can do, i have some phrase in stock...
Laurent
yes, he is!
Let's see who is the next GMCer that joins this one...
OK guys here is my take, Who is next?
Colab2.MP3 ( 17.41MB )
: 82
perfect Ricky !!!! but a bit loud , no ?
i just had to put my refrain on !!! (still ready ! ) but i need to wait to tomorow evening, cause i have promise a little guitar's break to my wife. 2 long fucin days without touching my gear !!!!
Laurent
Killer playing Ricky! Great job! I like your addition to this one. Thanks!
It's true that it's a bit loud, maybe you could re-mix it, is it possible?
Glad you guys like it, sorry for the loudness.
Here is the one remixed

Laurent
Very beautiful guys!!
I hope to see any other GMCer joining this one! Who else is in??
Thanks for the invitation Gabriel,
I 'll experiment with this one tonight and let you know if something is cooking.
Cool Aris.
yes !! another crazy guys ! craszy as we !
Laurent
Thanks for the warm welcome Laurent!
What you have there is too good already. I 'll try my best!
Thanks for the invite Gabi!!
I'll get something done in the next day or two!!
Cool guys! It's nice to see more of you joining this one!
Hi Guys,
I think I 've found something interesting. I am sending a preview so the next person can start working on it until I send the final polished version and the guitar file for the mixing. Hopefully tomorrow should be fine.
P.S. As you can tell something is producing this cable like noise and I can't get rid of it. I am using cubase 5 and the guitar cable is new.
Let me know on any comments.
https://soundcloud.com/aris-33/collab4
Hi Aris! Great to know that you are working on this one! I think that the idea is very promising. When recording the last version, please remember these details
- Be careful with timing
- Don't mix your guitar too loud in the mix.
- That last note... it's not bad but a more conclusive note could sound better, don't you think so?
Gabriel is right, too loud, timing...
can you use the Soudcloud marker to ingrate it in the post ?
Laurent
I'll wait for Aris to repost a new take and then I'll add mine.
we w8t for !
Laurent
Looking forward your update Aris.
Yep still waiting
Let's give him until tomorrow.
yep
Laurent
Still waiting
Ok guys! So the spot is open again, who want to continue this one? (You can repeat here if there is another take after yours)
I deeply apologize for disappearing like this.
I had to take vacations from work earlier than planned so I had no chance of recording while I was away. I tried to make some time but it was impossible. The schedule was full and vacation days were too short.
Anyway i m back now. In case nobody has recorded this spot yet, here is my second improved take. let me know if you will need any further corrections and I will do my best to short them out very shortly this time.

@Laurent: I don't know this feature you mentioned in soundcloud. Perhaps you could give me some more guidance on how to find it.
Aris, you need to make your Soundcloud downloadable so that I can add my take after yours!
Thanks mate!!
Great to hear from you Aris!! Thanks for your take! Please allow downloads on Soundcloud or upload your files here at the forum.
This tune is turning really cool, very catchy playing guys!
Cool!!! Very happy news.
I stayed up to rehearse and record it when I saw the post late at night. Thank you for the waiting guys!!!
Download is enabled now, I thought marking the tracks as public was enough.
By the way, my Cubase has started to fail and too often the sound collapses while recording. This is why you can hear this trembling noise at the end of the above take. Perhaps I can overdub that last note. I will check how it sounds.
In any case I wont mind if Gabriel does the mixing with the file I have already sent to avoid the waiting time.
Ok, here I remixed the track with Aris take without the last noise. It's ready for the next participant! Who would like to continue with this?
Track_with_aris_take.mp3 ( 10.55MB )

Great thanks Gabriel,
The mix sounds great!
This turns out really nice!! I'd like to participate and wait for the next take
Cool Mad! So you come after SJ's take.

Nice playing Sensible Jones! Thanks for your take! Looking forward Mad's work!
I won't be able to upload today, sorry. But tomorrow for sure!
Sorry, this took much longer than expected. Really struggled with ideas and still far away from satisfied. Anyway here it is
