I'm going to have a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop build pickup made for my new BC Rich Gunslinger to get it a little closer to the original Gunslinger specs from way back when the gunslinger was the spiffness. It's already got lime green going for it smile.gif But the DUNCAN DESIGNED pickup is sadly PURE CRAP.

I'm going to have custom ALTERNATIVE 8 built with the black cover that I dig smile.gif Should look like this and sound shredding monster.

*WHAT ABOUT YOU?: I respect everyone's thoughts and such regarding pickups so feel free to say what you'd rather have in your guitar smile.gif Also, anyone every buy a custom shop pickup?

I still have the original Duncan Design in my Hamer Californian… I agree those pickups sound like pure garbage. I'm going to eventually put a JB in the bridge that I'll take out of my Les Paul. My dream is to eventually put a vintage sounding pickup in my Les Paul. I'm debating Bare Knuckle 'The Mule' or a hot vinatge like Black Dog.

I remember when I had a low range ESP LTD years ago that had Duncan Designs… switched them out with EMG 81/85. Instantly turned it from a guitar I didn't want to play into a gem. smile.gif

Didn't I sell you that HAMER CALIFORNIAN? if I"m thinking of the same guitar smile.gif

Gotta say, great vintage axe but yeah the pickup was a pure hunk of crap. Needed better bits!!!

Hard to go wrong with BAREKNUCKLE pickups smile.gif They are all the rage currently, and for good reason smile.gif They sound great!! They are a tad on the pricey side since we have to lose big ( about 40 percent') switching from dollars to pounds as they are sourced in England. If the exchange rate ever gets even, those pickups will be a huge bargain!

It is the same guitar I bought from you. smile.gif I like it but the pickups hold it back from being a regular player… as you might say the same about your Gunslinger.

The Bare Knuckle price range is why I haven't pulled the trigger sooner. I was also debating some of the vintage Seymour Duncan pick ups. I'll have to look into the Seymour Duncan customizing more because the Bareknuckles are like $100 extra!

Also, anyone ever buy a custom shop pickup?

I have but not for myself. A few years back I ordered some from Stan Hinsley (not sure that he's still manufacturing these days) for a Customer. Really nice sounding, exactly what my Customer wanted!
Back when I was at College a friend of mine made me a set of H/Buckers for a guitar that I built back then and they rocked!! Seriously high output!!!
All BC Rich Gunslingers should be Green!!!

I decided on DUNCAN for the Gunslinger partially because the original high end Gunslinger came stock with a Duncan in it. In some models anyway. Also, real duncan pickups come stock in guitars that list for about $800 or more. Duncan designed come stock typically in guitars that list for less than that. (Exceptions exist of course, but those make the rule)

Your guitar (The Hamer) came stock with real Duncans on various high end models as well. So replacing the cheapy with a real duncan will make it visually and mechanically pretty darn similar to the high end Hamers that cost more than some used cars smile.gif I"d say go with the Duncan on that particular axe. You could have a pickup custom built to your specs for way cheaper than the BKPs and it will sound great smile.gif Not to knock BKPs as they RAWK. But they are way pricey and the exchange rate makes it even worse. If you were putting pickups in a boutique custom guitar, then I'd say BKP. But for that guitar, I"d say maybe a custom JB or PAF? Alnico 8 magnet and maybe a pickup cover to match the hardware?

BTW, I'm going to have the neck on my gunslinger "Re-Profiled" by a luthier like I did with my Dean Razorback. Best money I ever spent smile.gif Having the neck shaved to feel more like a wizard made that guitar play far better than I'd ever hoped smile.gif I'm hoping the same will work on the gunslinger. It's an unfinished neck so it's begging for a shave/sand!!!

Oh cool, I have never played a Gunslinger but assumed it had a thin neck to begin with. I have played an original Wizard ( had an early 90's rg550 maple neck years ago) and that was BY FAR the thinnest neck that I have ever played. I remember the picture you had with the Ibby wizard neck next to the Hamer neck and it was shocking how much thinner the Wizard neck was!! smile.gif If you don't mind me asking, what does it run you for a neck sanding job like that?

ABout the Hamer, since I already have a Duncan JB available I'm going to put it in the Californian. I'm not the biggest fan of the JB, but believe it will sound much better in the Hamer then it does currently in my Gibson LP… and I just been dying to get a PAF style pickup in my Gibson LP for the last year. smile.gif From my research and hearing some demos, I think I would get the sound I want out of my Gibson with a BK Blackdog (zebra) in the bridge (currently have a Duncan '59 in the neck).

My MIJ RG560 is honestly the thinnest neck I've ever played (18mm at the nut) and my personal fav guitar that I"ve every played. They are not for everyone to be sure. But I LOVE the Wizard 1 necks. They are sooooo good and fast that they are still sought out by players. MIJ RG guitars routinely sell for more used than they cost when new on ebay. Few guitars go up in value. Most decline. The MIJ RG seem to go up every year.

The GUNSLINGER does have a thin neck, but it's a bit thicker than I'd like so I'm gonna have it shaved smile.gif My luthier charges about $150 for this process which is fine by me. Takes the neck off, reprofiles it, then puts it back on and does a setup.

Good idea on the pickup swap!! The JB should sound spiff in that Hamer smile.gif Do a recording and share! smile.gif The BLACKDOG is a killer choice for your les paul. The wood and meat of that axe will go great with it. Sustain should be Biblical.

Todd

Well, $150 doesn't seem bad at all for such a job. Would love to hear a demo once you have the Gunslinger customize!

I think I will do a before and after recording… It will be interesting to be able compare the difference from a Duncan Deisgn to a Duncan JB!
