I was having a discussion the other day with a guy close to twice my age about the music we listen to as we grow up and he brought up a point which I couldn't really disagree with. The idea was that your musical tastes develop in your teens and by the time you reach your late teens/early 20's you've come to like a fairly limited number of bands in a genre you've developed towards. You continue to listen to this selected genre/group/artist throughout your adult life until you reach a point where you begin to bore of the repetitiveness. You try to find something new, but don't really find today's music to be anything of interest (I'm sure everyone has said, or at least heard someone say, "today's music is nothing compared to ............) and that seems to be the beginning of listening to talk show radio while you're sipping cognac by the fireplace, lol. Anyway, what I'm getting at is - While I feel like I have a fairly broad musical exposure and appreciation for various types of genres and styles, I also find I continually listen to the same bands over and over again. This brought to my attention that, Hey! Maybe I should try to listen to something new! Easier said than done, my efforts led me to some new works from old favorites or older works from new favorites, but it felt like cheating. This peaked my interest in wondering how everyone here goes about discovering new music. Are you still going to the gym with "Kill'Em All" loaded up in your iPod or busy posting angry reviews on iTunes about how so and so's 10'th studio album is rubbish compared to their earlier works or have you began this quest and can help a brother out? While I believe there will always be the classics that no playlist is complete without how do you go about finding the new gems to add to your musical palette? What I do is pick a favorite artist that I really enjoy listening to, like for example I have a Gary Moore channel, and it plays quite a bit that I am already familiar with, but also throws in similar artists and sounds. I found out about Snowy White the other day from that channel. Similar blues based sound, but very different from Gary Moore. I've stumbled onto a few bands from reading on this site, from guitar mags, and chasing back through "genius recommendations" and "the people who bought this also bought" links on iTunes. But, I figured there's got to be tons of stuff I'm missing in the ways of websites/magazines/forum boards/indie radio station type stuff I like the rabbit hole that is you tube too, but I find I can get sidetracked pretty quick with the random clicking, lol! @casinostrat, thanks for the advice man, I've never heard of pandora I will check it out! And a few very good songs too. When people think back to these previous years they tend to remember what they like. And when they think about the recent years they tend to remember all the junk. More like sipping an English ale by the fireplace and being amazed that I'm still wearing my tatty jeans when I'm 70 !
