The Importance Of Stamina

Hey GMCers,

In my everlasting quest to shred machine I've come across a very vital point that I've been missing for a really long time.

As I've mentioned in a couple of the practice threads I've really been working on some of Petrucci's scale fragments to start building speed. Over the first couple days I was amazed at my speed progression. I was jumping sometimes 20bpm per DAY. That's pretty awesome if I do say so myself and it seemed to good to be true... because it was.

I noticed that as I started getting higher and higher into BPM land that sometimes my playing would just die. Nothing would work, my fretting hand was way too slow and things just were not going the way they were supposed to!

After a couple days I realized what I was missing: STAMINA!

Sure I could play the licks at 130 or 140bpm, but I could only play them a few times before it all fell apart. The reason was because I didn't practice my licks for as long as I should have.

Since it took me so long to discover this for myself I thought I'd share my little testimony here in hopes that it can aid someone else in their journey.

If you are playing a repetitious pattern exercise, play it for AT LEAST one minute steadily before you raise that bpm level. You'll be thankful once you get up there in speed. It kills your hand, but that's how the muscle and ever important stamina.

Playing a lick for 5-10s at 140bpm like I was trying to (cutting the corners!) just doesn't cut it and won't lead you to be riffing at soloing at even higher speeds for minutes or hours during a concert or gig!

Hope this helps!

Ive got a great 1 for stamina biggrin.gif this works for all who have guitar pro... my metronome is the 1 from guitar pro, all i do is make a new song.. hit space bar until i get 100 bars to appear, this is my practice length. no matter what my tempo or BPM i will finish 100 bars of it, and if i can't then the BPM is too fast and i bring it back a bit ( slipping picks count too) smile.gif. Try it anyone, do it for scales for simple licks, speed picking, its my new hobby to kill time just work on right and left hand stamina, i also recommend like hand exersizers ( things to squeeze) but i have a question about grip masters? does anyone use them and are they recommended?

I have a grip master but im not sure what their supposed to do laugh.gif

I guess their supposed to strengthen your hand but you cant really tell if it really works but i think it does because when i first got the grip master it was hard to push it all the way down my now its getting way easier to do.

Good you asked this,I have grip master too and I'm using it a lot.
Great tool for stamina and condition.
Also try with shredneck , same as with grip master so you can use it almost everywhere plus it has strings on it wink.gif

Why not just use a real guitar? I mean all that thing is is just half a guitar isn't it? So why buy something different when it's half of something you've already got?

Thanks AIB will keep that in mind when i get fast enough but what are Petrucci's scale fragments that you used?

They are in the booklet that comes with his DVD, but the DVD is on YouTube so you can get them all off of there. I'm not sure what part of the 12 they are, though.

Quick Edit: Forgot to mention the title to search for on YouTube is Rock Discipline.

Using the real guitar of course!!
I just said that shredneck is smaller and easier to carry in some situations.
Per example,I'm writing this with my hand right hand and practicing legato. wink.gif
