Hey GMC,

What methods taught you chord theory and application the best? I know that in order to become a better lead player, I need better chord theory and how to really play the right notes. It's where I struggle the most (playing the right notes).

So was there any particular books, DVD's, internet videos? What advice do any of you folks have?

Thanks smile.gif

Hey mate! Well, I started off with a book from MI (Musicians Insititute), called "Modes for Guitar" - it proved to be insightful and easy to follow smile.gif maybe you'll like it, so give it a shot (it also has audio examples and tracks to jam along for each mode)

For choosing the right notes while improvising, it's best to work on the guitar, and work with arpeggios, since these are the notes from the actual chords.

Try my arpeggio workshop series, and work your way from there. You will see that each chord contains 3 or more notes, and those notes are scattered on the fretboard in forms of arpeggio patterns. Learning these patterns is first step towards improvising.

I was considering going back through your series, Ivan. I remember you showing me the intro lessons when we did MTP a year or so ago. I'll check them out.

Thanks Ivan/Cosmin smile.gif

Also, Cosmin I looked at the MI books on Amazon.com. They all seem to be getting good reviews from people. I might order a book or two from them. smile.gif

I like the Harmony & Theory book by MI. It's a very complete book and its explanations are very instructive, modern and simple. It covers scales, triads, chords, tonalities, modes, modulation, and many other harmony concepts. 100% recomended!
