I am curious to what made YOU join GMC? A specific lesson, instructor, or a recommendation?

I found this Shadow of the Ninja video on YouTube. I was just floored from the whole ensemble really. smile.gif It lead me to GMC and I had to join right away.

I was a bit overwhelmed at first with the amount of awesome lessons and content. I still feel like I have just scratched the surface of what I'd like to accomplish here!

Somehow came across some Marcus Lavendell videos on Youtube and saw this one.

I'm just like you, was overwhelmed with the amount of content and which direction I should go and I still have trouble focusing in on one thing because I always run across something new I want to get into. I have 6-7 lessons right now that I'm working on, including the Evening Blues. laugh.gif

Kind of similar for me as well. I was on youtube and stumbled across this -

Gab's black sabbath lesson. I was totally impressed and wanted to play it so my plan was to sign up for a month and just learn that lesson LOL!
As soon as I tried to learn it I had a bit of a reality check and realised how much I would need to improve to be able to play it.
on the plus side, Im a lot closer to playing it now..... about a year and a half later rolleyes.gif

one day I will have that lesson, oh yes, one day cool.gif

I still get overwhelmed with all the stuff I need to learn!

Hahaa good old YouTube! I found my way here the same way pretty much after I saw Kristofer's alter ego in a video like this one.
Craziness attracts more craziness biggrin.gif

After that I lurked in the forums, the wiki, and watched lots of videos where I saw great lessons, I also lurked in Todd's and Ramiro's video chats for about a year before I finally joined. Muris was probably the instructor that impressed me the most at first,I love that Oriental Shred lesson. After that I too discovered that Evening Blues lesson by Marcus that Greg posted above, and it became one of my favorites, probably in the top 3. So +1 on that Greg!

THIS! smile.gif I found it in my wild search of 'Canon Rock'. I finally clicked the link and found GMC. I was amazed so much and loved the instructor's lessons I bought this exact Jackson SLSMG. haha. Too bad Trond is no around anymore.

I think it was the Rise Against lesson, I'd just got into the band and then found this place was full of rock and punk and Metal, which was lacking in a lot of other online places

There was a guy a used to watch on YT called pasterofmupets. He always left a link in his description to GMC. He is not active as much on YT but it would be interesting to know if he was still at GMC. He subscribed in 2007.

One of the old instructors here - Marius Pop - a friend of mine here in Romania, was teaching here back in 2010 and when we met for a beer, he told me all about it. I was curious, so I wrote to Kris, asking about a job as an instructor. I prepared a little video and the discussions began. One thing led to another and in November 2010 I was publishing my first lesson here. Seems like it was yesterday...

Muris Varajic! I was searching guitar lessons and internet was just starting to be used around here. It was slow but I saw Muris's videos and I absolutely loved it. I saw I missed his MTP lesson by a month. Joined in, waited and learned most of his lessons and finally joined his MTP class as well. Too bad, I couldn't hang around with him for long.

One surprising thing was that after I discovered GMC, I saw it was Kris's idea. I had seen his lesson advertisement (Google Ad I think) few years ago. He had another site and I had bought his lesson. I think it was Sweet Child O Mine but I never really practiced it. I lost the whole thing now. But was glad he was the mastermind behind GMC. smile.gif

Really interesting to read your responses! smile.gif It must be cool to see how the site has evolved for some of you who have been around for many years.

Evening blues is one of my favorite lessons as well! STill haven't learned it properly though. The week I was "donut king" it was between that lesson and Guitar Loves Piano 6.

I'll chip in a somewhat different perspective, as someone who just joined within the last week. I'm in the demographic called "Old Guys Who Sucked As Teenage Players Then Got A Life And Are Now Finally Getting Serious About Making Music Before We Die Because We Have The Time And Money". Might be a bit too much to put on a file folder if you're a GMC market researcher smile.gif. Trust me, though, there are a lot of us.

There are lots of guitar instruction sites on the Interwebz. There are a couple of things about GMC that make it different (i.e. better), and actually worth paying for.

First, the lessons are organized into skill levels, and there are a wide range of levels. The transition from level N to N+1 isn't huge so it seems like progress can be smooth - more like a ramp than steep stair steps. I'm also impressed that the lessons seem to skew toward the higher skill levels. Mind you, this is "higher skill" from the perspective of someone who sucks. Level 2-3 stuff is about where I'm at so there's plenty of "headroom" left for me. Some sites max out at those levels. There's a good mix of songs vs. skill-building exercises here as well.

Second, the ability to record & publish a take for feedback. That's novel and bridges the online vs. in-person learning problem. We'll see if I have the balls to do that LOL (the smart money says no). I realize that feedback is vital, though, so I'm gonna have to just get drunk and get over it!

I had been wanting to take lessons and just figured to see what was offered online. At first I was reluctant because of the charge, but then I figured that the resources were there 24/7, and I didn't have to go anywhere on a schedule and pay $35 for 30 minutes, plus here we have this great community of musicians all working together and encouraging each other.

But honestly, while researching I ran across TheFireBall's video of his 3 year progression and that sealed the deal for me. I realize he practices much more than I do, but I was amazed at seeing the progress.

Actually a buddy of mine who no longer gets on here.

We were in the 7th grade and I told him I was wanting to get more serious about the guitar. He turned me over to this site that he was a big into and the rest is history!

I think he joined around '07 and I joined n '08. Good times.

Me three!

I kept my teenage guitar but barely touched it for decades. I decided to get serious, bought an Ibanez (which opposed to the one I had was actually very playable), realized that I should be able to use the web for information (which I couldn't back then), found GMC and lurked here for almost a year. By this time, Muris and Emir were very active on here and I really liked their playing, especially Emir's style. I also really enjoyed the overall "tone" in the forums, someone could ask a question or recommend a song or a player and no one would reply "read the effin manual" or "that other guitarist was way better".

Then came a hairy English dude and ruined it all. His style and skill, philosophy and being in general. It was especially the Michael Schenker style lesson that caught me (I don't know how many times I have mentioned that lesson by now). A while later, hairy dude announced a Christmas Challenge, and I think that was when I finally decided to join. I was gonna do the intermediate level challenge, but the administrative process took longer than I expected so I came in too late (which was probably good, since I had problems with a fast descending run in F major).

Now, more than two years later, I feel like a regular here and I don't regret for a minute that I joined.

H4H

It's really cool to read all this answers. I remember that after clicking on Fotolog advert with Kris video, I saw this site and the only instructor doing lessons here was Pavel. I discovered a section where the site said that they were looking for new instructors. I borrowed a photo camera , recorded a solo and sent it to Kris. It's been more than 6 years since that day. smile.gif
