GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Proms

Sadly I missed some of this but on Monday the BBC screened Nigel Kennedy's performance at this years 2008 Proms. Nigel's perhaps best known as a classical violinist - he's recorded what is one of the best performances of Vivalidi's Four Seasons imho. However at the proms he appeared with his jazz/impro group and played some of his own compositions and a few numbers by Hendrix - Third stone from the sun etc. He was using an electric violin plugged in to a distortion, cry baby wah etc and on into a Rivera amp. Jeff Beck also appeared as a guest on one song. Anyway it was nice to see the Proms diversify and good to see Nigel transgressing the classical boundary smile.gif.

On a related note - the line up for this years proms is excellent - Messiaen is one of the main featured composers and there is a lot more 20th C classical then usual smile.gif . Most will be simul-broadcast on BBC Radio3 and a few also screened live on BBC TV - BBC4 and BBC2. Though stupidly, imo, the BEEB have done little to cover the commissioned pieces from young British composers like Thomas Ades preferring to go safe with a Beethoven recital instead rolleyes.gif .

Anyway for anyone wanting to check out different takes on harmony and composition try to catch some of the Messiaen. Turangalilia particularly...

Cheers,
Tony

I have seen Nigel Kennedy some years ago in concert and it was amazing!! He was dress like something between punk and glam rock with an "classical" orchestra behind him. The concert was in two parts with classical peaces and after some Hendrix songs as well.

I remember that i was thinking at this concert that this what i see does not fit to what i hear ... really great !!
