Picked Up My Second Esp In A Month - Awesome Guitars!

Mar 4 2007, 12:26 AM	GMC:er Posts: 106 Joined: 18-February 07	Less than a month ago I bought a ESP LTD Viper 400 with the active EMG 85/81 set-up. The neck is smooth and fast, it is a joy to play and it sounds, well you know how EMGs sound I received a postcard from Sam Ash for 20% off any purchase of $499 or more for today only from 9-5. So last night I went and played a few guitars and fell in love with the ESP LTD EC-400 in Sunburst. It has the active EMG 60/81 set-up. I put a $100 deposit on it so they would hold it until today, luckily I did as the only other one ( a black one) sold immediately. This guitar plays as well or better than the Viper and gets pinch harmonics (squeals) better for sure. Luckily it fit well in my spare SKB case, so I did not need to buy another case. What a great deal, $449 for the guitar, $35 for the maintenance & warranty plan (4 set-ups a year and warranty wotrk through them), and since I needed another $15 to get the 20% I bought a suede strap. With the 20% off I was out the door for $428. after 7% tax. I bought the strap to help me with the Top Heavy Viper, but guess what.... This strap has made me 100% better in a few hours. I've never been able to play standing up with my nylon straps, so I always played sitting down. Let me tell you this, I just got done jamming for over 2 hours standing up with this GREAT strap, I used it with my Les Paul, Strat, EC-400, and even my Viper and it felt great. So far I am content with my little Marshall MGCDR 15w amp, it sounds pretty nice with my Digitech Death Metal Pedal. I think any more power during practice and my hearing might suffer. Don't forget, I am 43 years old, up until less than a year ago I only had a Gibson SG and a Gorilla amp. I've put in a lot of time and hard work to be able to do this and I am very thankful for everything I have. As for expensive guitars, the ESPs are far from expensive and if I could only have ONE guitar, I would probably go with the ESP LTD EC-400, even at Full Price $449 it is a BARGAIN. Just wondering was it easy to switch from a thick neck to a thin neck? I was wondering because a while a go i bought a jackson dinky and the thin neck felt like crap to me and i sold it. The Viper was $579 and if I had seen the EC-400 first I would probably just have bought that, although I do like the double cutaway body of the Viper for lower fret access. Rob - My Les Paul is a Les paul Special Faded, it comes with the 60s style slim taper neck. Very fast neck and very comfortable. My SG also had a 60s neck, but the fretboard was cheaper feeling and slower than the Les paul. Way back in the 70s I had a Les Paul Custom with the thick neck, I did not like it. I think you would like the ESP necks, very substantial and solid feeling, but thin. I have played some Jacksons and the neck just felt almost hollow, same with alot of Ibanez necks I have played. I did not like them. My $99 Dean Vendetta has a thin neck, also very light feeling, but I like it better than the Ibanez necks I have tried. Funny thing is, I owned a cheaper Jackson JS30KE for about a week (they took it back on the Viper), I liked the neck on that guitar better than the more expensive Jackson I played. I have yet to play an Ibanez I've liked??? I am sure they are great guitars, but I ave not played any of the VERY HIGH END models, only models up to $600-$700. Keep in mind, I am just getting back in to guitars and learning FAST, but I am not an expert, so take my opinions with a grain of salt. Mar 9 2007, 01:14 AM	GMC:er Posts: 192 Joined: 11-February 07 From: Pittsburgh, PA	esp's do rock!!! i'm putting a sanded down esp neck on this guitar i'm redoing... i do have to agree to disagree in a sense on the ibanez necks... i have two ibanez guitars. one is an sa160 around $450 a couple years ago and the other being my rga121 prestige model around $900 (list 1200)... hands down the prestige is the better neck, built with five pieces to strengthen it and prevent warping plus a little bit thinner so yes the more you pay the better but in all honesty the sa160 is the whole reason i stuck with ibanez... the neck on it is amazingly thin and built for speed. i have to say a couple of the RG models have had that "hollow" feeling you refer too but for the most part i love the feel of the ibanez necks... of course thats just my opinion and obviously we don't have the same hands or preferences haha nate ps i'm definitely gonna pick up an esp down the road though... built for speed and reliability.
