Ever tried to relax with a vid game and realized that it felt like tedious work? Recently I was so impressed with the MAD MAX trailer that I bought the game without renting it from RED BOX first (broke my own rule) and bam. The game get's tedious quick. It feels like a list of chores more than a fun distraction. Nothing more I hate than paying full price for a game that gets tedious after just a bit of play. Any other warnings?

One more to look out for, JUST CAUSE 3 is fun until you get stuck trying to zip rope yourself from roof to roof to cancel out the "monitoring system" in each villlage. There are elements of Grand Theft Auto (Sand box game play) that have crept in to many games including just cause, fary cry and others. Some folks love this. I don't have time for it. I usually keep game play to about an hour so I want it fast and quick. Wandering/faffing about is something that I can't imagine having time for. So let's start a list of games that have way to much faff. A poor faff to fragging ration.

1.)MAD MAX
2.)JUST CAUSE 3
3.)Any game that requires you to skulk about.

Anyone got any to add? Conversely, anyone got any fast paced games to add? On the Fast paced, sit down and dig in to it.

1.)Star Wars Battle Front
2.)Call of Duty Black Ops III
3.)Metro 2033 (can be a bit solitary at times, but still fast enough to keep my interest)

I"m sorry if I'm bagging on some folks fave games, fave style of game. Everyone has their own things of course and some folks love Sand Box/GTA style games. I did enjoy the "Gat out of Hell" expansion for Saints Row which has sand boxy elements but you get to fight satan and marry his daughter in the end and pick your ending cut scene and it's a cheap to buy game smile.gif

Totally agree with you.

Mad Max had it's lengths, same with Just Cause 2 (I suppose JC3 is the same).
Actually most open world games have this problem.
In comparison to the prequels, Arkham Knight and even Rise of the Tomb Raider also bored me a bit (they are still great games though). I'm a guy who plays games for the story, that's why games like WoW don't keep me motivated that long.
I actually rarely replay games once I've finished the story campaign.

Although I haven't played those games, Todd, I have seen similar criticisms regarding the endless slogging around with side missions just to collect and tick boxes. It's a stupid way of padding out games.

Remember when you could chuck a game in, the title screen would appear and you'd be playing it in less than a minute?

Ok maybe that's back to the SEGA days but still... playing games is supposed to be enjoyable. That's why we do it. We play games to escape the world - they should be fun.

I'm excited about the new DOOM! Lock and load, no messing. Big f*** off demons.

Yeah I didn't even finish Mad Max before trading it in (and I'm a huge fan of the series) tongue.gif

As far as tedious - any of the Fallout or Elder Scrolls games, although I absolutely love both series. Those are probably the only games that I can play and enjoy despite being so massive in scale.

And quick to the point games that I have played recently that were pretty good:

Dishonored
Wolfenstein
The Order (really short though, but now the game is dirt cheap)
Shadow Warrior (quite hilarious, it's like Duke Nukem)
Duke Nukem Forever (awful game but if you're a fan of the series it will serve you a purpose)
Sniper Elite III (the slow mo kill cam is epic - nothing like seeing your .308 round slowly blow through someone's skull)

Glad it's not just me smile.gif Did you get sucked in to Mad Max as well? The trailer for the game looked amazing and I was still buzzing from the movie so it seemed perfect. But then I played it. The road battles are a bit more lame than I hoped. It's third person and you vs 3 or 4 other bumper cars. Then you go on endlesss "missions" and the combat/game play starts to feel like work. So dissapointed. sad.gif

I just finished all the missions in just cause 3 and after the story mode, it's just a big sand box which for me, gets old pretty quick. Same thing in JUST CAUSE 2. once you complete the missions, it's just wander around and look for something to blow up.

Thanks for warning me about Arkham and tomb raider. I was worried they would suffer from this, it turns me off buying but maybe worth a rental smile.gif spending US $60 for a game that does RAWK is awful as two games could be a new pedal or some other hunk of gear.

Like you I play games for the story. I don't spend endless hours anymore doing death match and domination. I just don't have the time for it. sad.gif

Also like you, if the campaign is good, I will do it again maybe on a harder difficulty. The most impressive game I've played this year and for many years is CALL OF DUTY BLACK OPS III. The story mode is amazing and keeps going even after you think it's done. Great writing, great characters and non stop action fighting, flying fighter/bomber planes, run and gun, stealth, it's all there. If I had to pick one game to "own" it would be that one smile.gif

I'm with you on DOOM!!! I've liked them all and I'll be getting it when it hits. Looks like just pure fun smile.gif

Many thanks for the game tips! ANYONE ELSE HAVE GAMES THAT RAWKED THEY CAN MENTION?

I don't think I'll ever finish max at this point sad.gif Played through cod III again though. I'll check out the ones you mentioned as well!

I did like STARWARS just because you could just jump in and play. I sooooooooo wanted a story mode though!!!! I wanted to play through the movie really smile.gif Just pick a character fight through the first three films. Maybe in the next expansion pack smile.gif

Going back to the 360 I don't know if you ever caught Singularity or Remember Me? Both excellent games, forward driving, no filler BS.

People compared Singularity to Bioshock but I preferred Singularity by a massive margin.

I never got the chance to play singularity and I"m on a ps4 so I may have lost my shot sad.gif I loved BIOSHOCK1 but part II was sorta MEH. Now Bioshock III is one of the best story games I"ve ever played. Has great writing and deep themes. But it's not a post apocolyptic deal. Instead it's set in a perfect world in the clouds that has a much darker side. Any who hasn't played bioshock, can get the first one now for five bux and the third one for 10. Worth a play smile.gif

I mave have to get another 360 just to play the games I seem to have missed!!

I heard good things about remember me as well. It had a very spiff idea in the memory being part of the game play that you could go back through. They are starting to "remaster" games so that they work on new consoles. Just like they are trying to remaster old movies to work in HD. Seems sometimes, bits of the older stuff was just that good smile.gif I never got to play

THE LAST OF US

which I heard good things about but now it's remastered to work on ps4 so I'm gonna have to try it at some point smile.gif

My brother is really in to the game DESTINY and plays it quite a bit. I got a bit bored with it after running through the story mode as its the same missions after that over and over. But that's what expansion packs are for I guess smile.gif

Now that's the thing... I know I'm in the minority here but I really didn't gel with that game. I didn't really enjoy the twee Americana perfection in the sky setting but that's just a personal taste thing. The story was fragmented to me and I found myself just wanting to complete it to get it over with. Definitely a unique game though, no doubt, and visually it's very nice

I can appreciate that smile.gif For Bioshock III, It was sooooooo soaked in Americana that I didn't think it would travel outside the states too well. It was packed with inside jokes on the social development in the states. It also toyed with our deep puritanical roots as they relate to our religious bent in this country. So it tugged at many issues rooted deep in the American psyche but for other folks I can see how it may just seem preachy and or tedious. But yeah, I did really dig it smile.gif

Still, Black Ops III really crushed it. If you guys get the chance, rent black ops III. Even if you don't marry it, it's worth a weekend smile.gif

I can vouch for the Last of Us - really solid game with a compelling story, I really got attached to the characters and was bummed when it was finished because I didn't want it to end tongue.gif

Although just a rumor - supposedly Naughty Dog owns the rights to Crash again and are going to be doing a Reboot smile.gif

EDIT: Alien Isolation was also a good game if you are a fan of the Alien Franchise - a balance between fast paced and suspenseful.

Thats what I've been hearing. Some of the best writing ever in a game. Looking forward to it smile.gif Some great games being pimped here, anyone else?

Yeah it just gels with some people and not others, there's nothing per se wrong with the game's setting.

I'd like to clarify, though, that I do enjoy American culture in general, just in case anyone got the wrong impression...... but I guess I don't have much connection to that period of history, the founders, forefathers etc..

Gimme Mustangs, 'Vettes, Chargers & Burgers though, and I'm happy smile.gif

There was a theme about racism and slavery going through bioshock infinite and using technology to make slaves of people. The big angry guys with steam coming out of them, (big mechanical men) are sorta frankenstein creatures that walk around going "every step is agony".

I hear ya on vettes and chargers and burgers! smile.gif That should be a game!

Funny how you mention games that feel like work cause there's a game that's literally just work. It's called 'Papers, Please', you're a border control officer for a dystopian eastern European country and you look through their paperwork to see if they can enter the country or not. It's an interesting little indie game with a bit of story but I don't think you'd like it Todd. laugh.gif

Broforce though, it's free with Playstation Plus this month if you have it. Super fun game packed full of references to classic action movies, just run and shoot and blow stuff up.

I have only just got back into gaming when I found the Humble Bundle site. I bought all the Tom Clancy games for $15 the other month and then bought a handful including Rayman, a couple Assassins Creed, a couple Far Cry titles, The Crew, again for around $15.

Most games definitely take me a lot longer than most people to complete. I don't think I ever completed a GTA game some of the missions in them I just couldn't do, so they felt like too much work and not enough enjoyment.

some more great suggestions and some to stay away from! The TOM CLANCY games are quite good IMHO. BTW thanks for the HUMBLE BUNDLE tip! They have some amazing prices!!!

Also they are selling the "CRYTEK ENGINE" for whatever folks want to pay. Basically it's the same thing pros use to develop high end games and they are giving you all the in game assets for free. So if you are one who wants to look in to building games this si a great way to do it. You can get a free game engine and all the bits (guns/characters/etc.) that go in it for whatever you would like to pay. It's the same software that makes some of the biggest games out there. And it supports charity smile.gif

My fave clancy game was FUTURE SOLDIER. It was just a great game that was years ahead of its time and now we see many of the things in that game showing up in other games like COD. The bio enhancement, the super suits that add strength/speed, drones, etc. I was suprised it was never a BIG game but that's how things go smile.gif
