Thought are so many guitar players out there. All of them plugging away, doing their thing. Yet so many are eclipsed by the super stars out in high profile orbit.
But, like me, you guys must have players that you really like yet are not lauded by the world at large. Players that touch your soul in some way. Well now's your chance to rectify that. How about a list of five of your guitarists that don't seem to have the recognition that you feel they deserve. This is totally subjective of course. There may be players out there that do things better but I am interested in the ones that move you personally. So a list, and maybe a quick chat about what they do and how you found them. Sounds fun, yes?
I will kick off and dive in first then.

1- Zal Cleminson.
Ex Teargas and Nazareth but best known for his work with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. His crazed clown make up and confrontational live approach made him ideal to work with Alex. He was the one that made want to play in the first place.

2-Ariel Bender.
Mott The Hoople Les Paul jnr abuser. also played with Spooky Tooth as Luther Grovesner. Brash and loud and can bend a string from there to back again.

3-Yarol.
Now here's obscure, unless you're French. Axeman for FFF. French Funk Federation. Love his slide guitar work particularly on Barbes from their live album.

4-Eddie Hazel.
Parliament and Funkadelic maestro. Check out the track Maggot Brain for some tear jerking lead guitar. Sadly no longer with us. RIP Eddie.

5-Keziah Jones.
Amazing funk/slap rhythm work from this singer/player. Highlights of his work include Wisdom Behind The Smile (cash) and Walking Naked Through A Bluebell Field.

Right, that's my list. once I got started it was harder who not to include. Your turn.

I find new underrated guitarists all the time at youtube and when I play with my band. It's tricky to define exactly what we mean by underated, if we mean that he doesn't have the recognition that guys like Vai and Gilbert have, I could go with this one from my country. He is popular here, but nobody knows him in other countries...

Hey Jonesy! (may I call you that?) It's possible we were at the same gig then! That was my first encounter with Kez too. This dimunitive figure with a battered acoustic guitar, a hat and huge grin stunned the Fiddler into silence as soon as he played. a great evening as I recall. Hows about your list of players then. Its harder than it seems because I had loads I could have included. Moses Mo from Mothers Finest is one. See what I did there, sneaked another player onto my list.. Bad Becca, Bad!!

That sounds like the exact same gig to me!! I was right at the front, Stage Left!
I shall compile a list and post at the weekend sometime, I'll try to find any Youtubes of my suggestions!!

YES! Maggot Brain is a masterpiece.

I'm a big Dean DeLeo fan (STP). Love his tone and style. He (and his brother Robert DeLeo) come up with some great rock riffs.

I'll actually go with a trio called the Hellecasters. More of a country feel but each has their own style/sound. Really really good 3 part harmony in most of their songs.

Edit for names: Will Ray, Jerry Donahue and John Jorgenson.

I could see STP live some years ago and I was amazed by the whole band, they were like a modern grunge Zeppelin, the guitar work and tone was killer. It seems that all these years with Army Of Anyone make him polish his playing and sound.

Well, that track is pre-Army of Anyone.

The Army of Anyone stuff is great. Had a chance to see them twice and had to miss it.


He is great at really orchestrating his guitar tracks. I read that for the Army of Anyone stuff he would record a track, then go back and tune down a few cents. Then record a double. It would be low in the mix, but would thicken up his sound. Always wanted to try that.

Thats a new one on me Greg. I really like that track you posted there too. I am discovering lots of new great stuff thanks to GMC members. I ignored Joe bonamassa for ages as I dont like his blues stuff, but was pointed towards Black Country Communion by Bleez and I really like it. Going to look for Hellecasters now. Thanks

Oh Man! ANOTHER one to go on my list. Sheesh have I been living under a rock for the last few years? What a great sound he has with slide. I really like Ricky Medlocke in his Blackfoot days too. I was so disappointed with that album Skynyrd put out, God and Guns. It was like a survivalist manifesto. Bring back Blackfoot I say. Although admittedly they have a Tap like mortality rate, I love their no nonsense head down and boogie approach.

Wowsers! That is incredible, just incredible. Never would have thought that a pedal steel could rock like that. Great bass player too. thanks for posting that. Hmmm, my list is getting longer and longer...

Randolph is fantastic. Underrated?. . . . I wouldn't say that. I've seen him on a cover of a few magazines and playing on some big festivals.

I can't name many guitarists, but there's a guy named Matthew Mills, who made me want to pick up the guitar. He's a shredder from Virginia and he is very underrated. He is a teacher, which is a good thing, but he deserves better, he should be playing in a famous band. He once played in Forgotten Realm, but they're inactive now.

Complete speculation, but I wonder if he is where he'd like to be in terms of career and how known he is, if he was in America would he be more well known and have more opportunities, does that even matter with the internet nowadays.
