I folks,

My roomate has just come back from a 3 months trip. First thing he told me is that he had a major GAS problem. He wants to buy a new guitar and a new amp. He really wants a Fender Telecaster Thinline 72 reissue.

I've played once with that guitar and I can tell you it was really impressive, those humbucker pickup where really giving a drity tele sounds. Even tho, it was good I just want to make sure that he his going to buy something he likes, he is very different for me when it comes to guitar. I buy them with the feeling I am not impressed until I have tried one. Anyway it is going to be cool trying new guitar.

He also told me that he wanted to buy a new amp. When I ask what kind of amp he wanted he answered me anything that is a Fender with all tube. I like tube amps but isn't a bit loud to cary in an appartment and he also told me that he wanted to sound awesome at a next reharsal. I don't know what kind of apms he could buy, he was aiming the deluxe 40 watts I think and when I told him that it was way too loud... He couldn't believe me. I know there is a master volume on it but the beauty of the tube amp is the nice breakup you get when it is plenty loud......

I just noticed that I no clue on buying a tube amps... I unfortunately never bought one and always wanted one.

Any tips on buying those?

We all got our GAS Problems, I have to scrape together A LOT of cash to get a Gibson Les Paul Custom and I also want a 7 String again...

About the tube amps:
Yes 40 watts are extremely loud and yes Tube amps sound the best when fully cranked

BUT

that does not mean that they sound bad at lower volumes, they just don't sound as good as they do cranked. You can try the desired amp at a store and confirm for your self if it sounds good at bedroom levels.

If he can get an amp with an effects loop, he can use an Omnisonic or equivalent to keep the volume under control and still get the benefit of the tubes.

These work well and are cheap to buy.

I'd suggest the Hotrod Deluxe, it's 40 watts.
I havn't looked at the Deluxe vintage modified but that could be something.

If he wants that signature Fender clean sound than MickM suggestion is great. 40 watts is optimum for rehearsals/gigs and it will sound nice at bedroom level. You can always get an attenuator.

About attenuators (at least mine)
I got one and tend to think it's quite useless. For bedroom playing modern amps with preamp gain control and separate volume sound soo good anyway, and even if you attenuate the speaker won't be pushing any watts so it won't sound that great anyway. And playing loud at least my attenuator sucks tone so I rather disconnect it, turn the amp down and have a better sound. smile.gif

Tell him to check out the Fender Princeton Recording Amp. I had one of these and LOVED the tone. It has a built in Attenuator so you can crank the tubes for the beautiful tube breakup, but still play at bedroom volume levels. I traded it for another strat only because my kids are too little, and I have to play through headphones so it sat in my closet. When the kids are older, I will definitely buy another one!

I've got a Fender Blues Jr NOS and it is a wonderful amp for home playing. It has that gorgeous Fender clean tone and it takes overdrive pedals really well!

I Finally went on my gear journey with my friend. He didn't bought an amp yet but he bought quite a nice guitar that busted the initial budget (like always).

The winner is a Fender Telecaster ThinlineDeluxe 3 tone sunburst

That thing plays like crazy... I never taught a telecaster could sound like that.... I do not actually consider this has a telecaster. You really get a nice fender tone couple with those nice pickups tone....

Anyway if you ever get the chance to try one of those do it you are going to be surprised...

Now my Strat is starting to get jealous wub.gif

Yeah it's real. Half the body of Thinlines is hollow. Not too deep, but hollow. The other "half" is solid body.
