Great. Ok, the first thing that I do is to choose any drum loop to start jamming over it. I use EZ drummer, but I think that Addictive must have some loops out there. If not, you can download some guitar pro files or midi of your favorite bands and use only the drum channel. Search for a good drum loop and start jamming over it. If you want to create a powerful modern metal riff, you can use these three scales:

Aeolian Mode
Pentatonic Minor + Blue note
Phrygian Mode

In the case of my modern metal backing, I started with a minor progression player with power chords.

A5 - G5 - F5 - F5 G5

and then I created a riff in E Phrygian minor centered in the root note....

Once I had both parts, I edited the drums to make it fit with the guitar and wrote the bass midi track that basically plays the same than the rhythm guitar.

If you are not too inspired, you can start playing any riff that you like (from any famous band) and then try to jam variations of it until you find something of your own. Change some notes, change the tonality, the scale, a bit the rhythm until you find something new and cool.

Let me know if this helps and please post your ideas!
