GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Fret Position Changes On Rec Takes

Posted by: bill chalmers Nov 17 2012, 01:41 AM

When we practice a lesson do we need to keep to the fret positions given in the lesson or can we choose the same notes elsewhere on the guitar. Also can we submit lessons with a change in fret positions or is it a strict rule that we must adhere to the positions given in the lesson. I bring this matter up because I like to play further down the guitar (i.e. higher fret positions) due to the fact that it makes bending strings a lot easier.

Hi Bill

It shouldn't have any problems with this, until you bind to the exact same note. However fret positions given in the lessons are the fastest and easiest way to play the whole thing, be careful it might cause bad habits !

I actually have a few frets that are so worn down on my PRS that I've been practicing a few things in different neck positions just to avoid the dead notes. I think it's actually a good thing to get to know where the notes are and how to reach them all over the place. I've submitted a few REC takes where I had to move a few things around like that. ... going to have the PRS re-fretted very soon.

Hi James, Thanks for your feedback. It is very helpful it reassurse me to know that you have submitted takes in that form.
Yes I think guitar players should be able to play all over the fret board.

Hi Bill, no it doesn't matter at all.. the notes are the same. We all like to use different fret positions don't we ? smile.gif

Hey Bill
I just joined GMC myself and considered the same thing after all a note is a note. But after thinking about I realized I am learning to play the guitar so what may seem tougher may be the way to go. I used to (do I'm trying to break the habit) play vertically on the fret board but now if it's more difficult I'll opt for that. Anything to avoid bad habits and keep pushing the comfort zone. After a while I reckon it doesn't matter other than the texture or color to the note played on one string or another, so for me it's also what may sound appropriate. Sometimes you want it fuller sometimes twangy.
Hope this helps.

The result is what matters, sir! If you can have the exact same result and relaxed performance, in the original recording, in my opinion, you may very well play with your toes, if possible biggrin.gif I am exaggerating of course, but you get the picture smile.gif

Bill

Be careful they are just lulling you into a false sense of security, I happen to know, if you use a different fret, Cosmin comes round and chops off the offending finger!

Hi PosterBoy

HeHeHe So that was what happened to Django Reinhardt. I did not realise that Cosmin was his mentor biggrin.gif . Never mind it made him play better. So beware mentoring programs. Also beware of Ben's program because he chops off your fingers with a samuria sword. ohmy.gif

You can cut off all of my fingers as long as it makes me a better player. Cosmin, Now I see what you mean by playing with your toes, as per a previous post. tongue.gif
