GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Metronome speeds and progress

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Nov 9 2006, 07:58 AM

Post your top metronome bpm (beats-per-minute) speeds. When you have made some progress just edit your post - but leave the old speeds so we can see your progress. Don't forget to chose font "Courrier new" (upper left corner) when posting your tabs.

Here are some of my current exercises and speeds. I will most likely not get to edit my speeds - since I no longer focus on inreasing speed, but rather correct mistakes (cleanliness, control, eveness etc) caused by me wanting to push speed a little to quickly.... wink.gif

Tapping (allows for most speed!) 160 bpm sixteenth note triplets
This is the kind of exercises you will find in http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/One_o_one_tapping4.htm

(Could fit the "T":s to the right place - check the lesson istead for exact tabs)

Speedpicking sixteenth notes 165 bpm (haven't done too much of this)

So you might be noticing some techniques allow for way more speed than others! smile.gif

Two note per string madness!!!!

all normal E-tuning

------------12--14--
---12--14----------- repeat

16th notes: 158 (yay!)
- started with downstroke then alternate picked everything -

(economy picking works better for this but I still have to learn/practice that technique)

-----------14-------- repeat
-----12--------------

8th notes: 215 (so annoying )
-started with downstroke then alternate picked everything -

------------------------12--14-----
-------------12---14--------------- repeat
--12---14--------------------------

16th note triplets: 85
-started with downstroke then altenate picked everything -

----------------------*tick*-12--13--14--
*tick*--12--13--14-----------------------

triplets: 180
-started with downstroke then altenate picked everything -

I can't wait to improve xD

gday mates,

i been practising a lot on the metronome lately i just thought id post my bpm ....im not sure if what im doin is correct or not but its the way i have been doin it so if u think its wrong gis a buzz and ill try it another way....

eighths: A minor pentatonic scale ascending then descending @ 170bpm

Sixteenths : 12----14 (d)
12----14 (a) ( repeating ) @ 96 bpm

Triplets: something like this 8---7---5 (e)
8---7---5 ( b )
8---7---5 (g ) Repeating @ 110bpm

Sixteenth triplets:2 note per string 12---14 (g)
12---14 (d)
12---14 (a) repeating @ 59 bpm

Now im not sure if u are meant to do the same notes all the time like everything is done 12----14 all the time like youse have been doin it or i can be anywhere...this is just what ive been practising but ive done it other ways and its pretty much the same.

Cheers mates cool.gif \m/

I havenĀ“t practised a lot on the metronom. But there will now be a change.

sixteenth notes. 112 bpm

Posted by: BollyRotten Nov 15 2006, 11:06 PM

why does everyone want to play so fast?

my bpm is crap! like most of my playing at the mo. cant seem to get my head round most exercises

Posted by: xhernan Nov 16 2006, 12:16 AM

biggrin.gif it's not really about playing fast it's about keeping time i think. Playing fast is just a plus, i feel that keeping time is the ultimate goal

Posted by: Kristofer Dahl Nov 19 2006, 02:34 PM

Okay I have edited my first post and added bpm:S and tabs. Scroll up or click http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?act=ST&f=7&t=2131&st=0#.

OK, I'm new to the metronome, and I can't play that fast, so I have alot of room to improve!

Simple four notes chromatic per string, so I'm moving from string to string.
e---------------------------------------------
B--------------------------------------------
G---------------------------------------------all the way up
D-------------------------------14-15-16-17-------------
A----------------14-15-16-17--------------------------
E-14-15-16-17----------------------------------------
Alt picking 16th: 120; 140

three notes per string
e--------------------------------------------------------12-14-15-------
B---------------------------------------------12-13-15-----------
G----------------------------------12-14-16--------------
D-----------------------12-14-16------------------------
A------------12-14-15-------------------------------------
E-12-14-15--------------------------------------------------
Also improvised some triplet stuff
Economy picking triplets: 160, Alt picking triplets: 160,180; 192

2 note per string
A------------5-7------------------------------
E-------5-7------------------------------------
Alt picking-8th notes: 208(maxed out my metronome, so I don't know what to do now huh.gif )

Sweep picking 8th notes: 140/150 Sweeping 16th note triplets: 95

First time doing 16th note triplets, but I actually can play faster 16th notes triplets than triplets!
16th note triplets: 100

About the metronom. Yesterday I practised 4 hours with the metronom, and after that my fingers was tired so I started a backing track and i thought: "WOW I got feeling today cool.gif "
And the same thing today. I come up with very nice improvisation.
Anyon recognize it?

I'll post the rest later on today, man I can barely count to 6 in my head at 50 bpm tongue.gif

Perhaps you should try triplets (3 instead of 6) at 50 bpm - easier to count.

laugh.gif Hey Guys! biggrin.gif

i only just watched the metronome Vid today

i understand it pretty much

but i could do with some guidlines

for how long to practise with it

and i know the whole the more

you practise the better you get thing but

i find it easier if i have something to follow

and does the whole "no pain no gain"

qualify with this?

or should i stop when i feel pain ?

oh and i was getting 4 note per beat on 70bpm

So i've been practicing with a metronome every day now for a while and i'm noticing big improvements in my speed. I decided to start posting my results on here as well.

Triplets--175

2 notes per string-210

I'm going to try to update this regulary hopefully we will see some big improvements. biggrin.gif

Unfortunately, how much you want to play isn't very important when considering chronical injuries (= that hurt all your life so you never pick up the guitar again) - however, if you just have sore fingertips you can practice the fingers that aren't sore... smile.gif

PS I know the feeling of wanting to play but not being able to...

By the way, you should be happier over your sixteenth notes - they are faster than the eight notes! smile.gif

I've been working on speed since early December ..
started under 60 bpm 16 note triplets.

Eighth notes 190 bpm

Triplets 140 bpm

Sixteenth notes 110 bpm

Sixteenth note triplets 67 bpm

Kris i was also wondering with those times from me, what do you suggest would be a good way to play ( ie: with 2, 3, 5 notes per beat etc.) the five note licks from your horizontal pentatonic shifting lesson at 100 bpm? smile.gif

Sorry if i was unclear, i meant at that tempo 100 bpm what is the best way to play the string of 5 notes. Like 2 beats per click 3 beats per click etc. I couldn't really tell how you were playing it in the lesson and was curious.

Did I mention a 5-note pattern in there? Which one was it?

2 + 3 is tricky but a great exercise. The easiest is just to play 5 notes per beats - all though it might a bit fast for you. (In that case I would recommend slowing down!)

I've shopped at the same store for twenty years and the owner laughed pretty good when I came in for a metronome. Anyway, this is the first time I've practiced for any real length of time. I'll just post the lesson I'm working on for now. The speeds are hard for me for two reasons (1) I am primarily a rythm guitar player and (2) I have switched how I hold my pick and it makes me feel like I'm playing left handed.

LOL! I just posted an introduction and touched on this very same question, guess I should have read through the rest of the forums first tongue.gif

Since I'm posting here while resting my aching hand (boo hiss) I'll repost my speeds here where they belong:

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 1: 4 notes per string 1,2,3,4 vertical pattern, 60bmp
Day 3: 4 notes per string 1,2,3,4 vertical pattern, 70bmp

A big improvement due to working my pinky for the first time, expect slower steady progress now.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 5: 4 notes per string 1,2,3,4 vertical pattern, 80bmp

Skipped a night's practice to rest my hand because it was aching, amazed to discover last night that I got a 10bpm boost again! Must be due to adding the pinky tongue.gif

Also added a new pattern to avoid being stuck in a rut:
4,3,2,1 Ascending (start on low e and run to high e) - sounds nice and confused me at first, good to mix it up a little smile.gif

Oh, I should say I'm not only playing 4 note per string vertical runs, I start out with quarter notes at the same bpm to warm up and build up to 16ths running the pentatonic scale in Am. I've also added sixteenth note triplets to my routine now but for those I drop the tempo to 50bpm tongue.gif I've also started to move the pattern up and down the neck, usually drop the tempo a few bpm to assist the delay in changing position. I think after a month I will add a new scale to the routine to spice it up some more.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 6: What the heck is going on!?

Another 10 bpm boost across the whole routine. I'm not sure if this time it's because my warm up is now better, slowly building up allowing me to push a bit harder towards the end of the session but I'm sure this is as far as I can push at the moment so I really do expect this to be consistant for a few days at least. I also tried to push the tempo up higher than I can manage, 100bpm, struggled, then brought it back down making the slower one at 90bpm, although increased from my previous session's 80bpm, seem easy. Not a bad trick to try. I'm a little concerned that sticking to the Am pentatonic box is giving false results, I'd expect to slow down a lot when I get round to trying a new shape but I'm not tempted to learn one yet. My target is 100bpm for at least an entire week's practice before I introduce a new scale. Loving it though, Kris is right, metronome practice can be very addictive! It's easy to spot improvements, even if they are minor biggrin.gif

Well i know this.

On January 31st, i had this lick down full speed at 16th notes 160bpm

|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
|----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ect.
|-----------------------------------------------------------------------11-12-15-12-14-16-----
|------------------------------------------------11-12-15-12-14-16-----------------------------
|-------------------------11-12-15-12-14-16----------------------------------------------------
|--11-12-15-12-14-16---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just a basic Lick that i practice speed and accuracy with, now i have it down at almost 190bpm Speedpicking, If i cheat and do it legato i can get to almost 200, legato seems to be easier to play faster in for me, For the last 3 moths or so, ive bee practicing speeding up what i already know how to do, Sweep, Tap, And Picking. i try to practice each 45-60 minutes every day for each technique

This i can play at my fastest, 16th notes, 200bpm, Sweepin comes easy to me, especially 3 string (Thanks to M.A.B.'s Speed Kills 1 and 2! )

|--19p15------------15h19p15-------------15h19p15--
|---------17-----17------------17------17---------------
|-------------16--------------------16-------------------
|----------------------------------------------------------
|----------------------------------------------------------
|----------------------------------------------------------

and if i change to this, the tempo drops to about 185-190. and if i did it 4 string sweeps, well, i cant do 4 string sweeps, i dont know why, but i can barely play them at all for some reason

|----------------14h17p14--------------------------14h17p14--

I set my metronome to 100bpm. I play scales Major and Min Pentatonic at this speed. I still don't understand the connection but I'm doing it. My brain is not connecting the Metronome and the scales but I'm still trying.

Kris,
I've been playing for a while but I seriously want to play well. So here I am. 70bpm is where I will start and try to play clean before increasing the speed.
Wish me luck.

This is probably gonna shock you all...

My metronome is ticking at 40 bpm with scale patterns... smile.gif

But only because I've found out about a method of practicing called "21 day method"

The whole purpose of the method is that you play a exercise superslow, for 21 days.
I found out about the method on UG.com, and it seems be quite good... I tell you more when I've finished the 21 days.

But otherwise I'm playing sixteenth note chromatics at 120 bpm, and triplet scale patterns at 95 bpm... rolleyes.gif

Just started the metronome lesson to day. I don't have a metronome at the moment but have one on the way. I'm using the one on the lesson and decided I will start off with the 60bpm. When mine gets hear I'll tinker with the bpm.

I don't have a metronome yet so I have been using the one at www.metronomeonline.com. I will be getting a metronome soon but the one there has been working well for me for the time being.

Peace!

double post sorry smile.gif

Whatever happened to this topic? I'd like to bring it back smile.gif

To be honest, I just started using the metronome two nights ago! And I've only been alternate picking since about 2 months ago, maybe a little less. So here's where I am:

Whole notes: somewhere in between 300 and 400bpm I don't care much to find out tongue.gif

Eighth notes: at least 240, haven't pushed myself much with the eighth notes.

Triplets: 120bpm in a pattern like so:

E |-10-12-13----------|
B |----------10-12-13-|
G |-------------------|
D |-------------------|
A |-------------------|
E |-------------------|

et cetera.

Sixteenth Notes: 100bpm, in a pattern adding an extra note to the last one:

E |-10-12-13-12-------------|
B |-------------10-12-13-12-|
G |-------------------------|
D |-------------------------|
A |-------------------------|
E |-------------------------|

et cetera.

Sixteenth Note Triplets: about 60bpm, in a 2 string pattern:

E |-------------------|
B |-------------------|
G |-------------------| x4
D |----------12-------|
A |-10-12-13----13-12-|
E |-------------------|

followed by

E |-------------------|
B |-------------------|
G |-------------------| x4
D |----------13-------|
A |-10-12-13----13-12-|
E |-------------------|

where I switch from index-middle-ring-middle-ring-middle to index-middle-slide middle-ring-middle-middle

I also do stuff lower on the fretboard, and different patterns, variations on these, etc, but the 10-12-13 kind of thing is basically my standard measuring tool, if you will, for when I want to test my speed.

I don't post much but I thought I'd make an exception and try something.

Starting now I'm going to play the exercises in Kris's opening post and see how long it will take to get up to the same speed as him (yeah right). I haven't played any of these before so this first update will probably be full of really really slow bpms.

Anyway, time to pick up the guitar!
