This pic of a studio really inspired me today. It's not overly huge or complex, more of a mastering room. But honestly since I track mostlyl sitting in front of my desk/computer, this would be killer. Anyone else got studio pix from their own or elsewhere that really spoke to them?

That is an AWESOME studio!

I'm building a new desk tomorrow and over the long weekend. I had ordered one, but after a week it still has not shipped, so I cancelled today, went to Lowe's Hardware and purchased the wood, paint and stuff to make the desk - I even had them cut all the pieces to size.

It's not going to be a difficult desk to build, It's really just a shell, with file cabinets used as drawers - but it will look nice I hope.

In the bottom I am going to cut a hole out to fit the subwoofer in the back panel, then on the top use a hutch from my old desk which will fit 3 monitors. It will be smaller than my old set-up, but make everything much more convenient I hope - and a fresh practice area is always fun and inspirational.

We had a desk custom built for us by a local master carpenter rather than buy one of the standard 'off the shelf' ones from the likes of Sterling Modular. In the end it was cheaper - partly as we didn't have to pay an extortionate amount for delivery - and meets our needs better as it is designed specifically for our room and equipment. Another plus is that it looks different as it is 5 sides of an asymmetric octagon, rather than being yet another ready made desk.

Awesome, I would love to see a picture of it.

The desk I had purchased was only $200 - and that was the cheapest I could find it online, but for all I know it was coming from Taiwan and no telling how long it would have taken to be delivered. The priced included "FREE Delivery" it said - but nothing in this world is free, so you can imagine the materials used to make the desk.

I was able to purchase everything and have my boards cut to size for $100. So that cut the price in half and I know the quality of the wood is much better than the particle board (held together by laminate) I ordered.

My only obstacle is how to cut the hole cleanly. But like you said, this will be perfect for the space available, which for me is very limited.

cut from one side and before you get thru, flip the board over and finish the cut,
If the teeth of the blade ever pull the wood away from the board, then you will likely have splintering.so you try to have the blade pull the wood into itself , to diffuse this.Don't know how to explain this simpler

Here you go, both were taken just after the desk wasbrough in and before we screwed the equipment in to the racks properly but it should give you an idea of what it looks like. The 3 equipment racks that face the monitors are inset at an angle to provide a smaller footprint to the monitors. The other two racks that back on to the side wall aren't angled and one has the pc screen on it. To be onest I don't look at the scree a lot so it's less distracting for me to have it the side and out of the way. Here's the photos:

Yes there are a lot of desks made from mdf/particle board and often the quality of them is a bit questionable. Some of them seem to be little different to a computer desk. This way not only have you got the desk for less money but it will be better quality smile.gif

That's looks great! I like that octagon sort of shape and my hutch will give the same type of effect.

I was able to cut that piece out. I popped out of bed at 4 this morning because I could not wait to get started, but had to until the sun started to come up.

I used a hand held rotary to cut the sides of the cavity, then a dremel tool to open up just enough on the back side to fit a powered hand held saw down in there and cut along the back side. Sanded it down with the dremel and just tested it over the subwoofer and it fit perfectly.

Right now I'm putting a primer coat on all the pieces of wood - but the cutting is done. Then I'll paint it all black and put it together. I'll have to put it together inside because it would be too big to get through the doors - I wish I could work on it all outside though.

I'll post a pic once it's done.

Sounds great and I can understand why you woke earl wanting to make a start!

The desk top of ours is in two sections as it would also have been physically a bit big for a single piece. I can't remember what it is across the main diagonal but it's something over 7 foot.

Look forward to seeing the photos smile.gif

'studio' desks are WAAAAYYYY overpriced. It is ridiculous. The studio I've been working with (Emissary Studios) has some really crafty guys and they also build their desk (and build out a lot of the studio in general. Seems the better way to go, and you get exactly what you want.

You are right SeeJay. It is a ridiculous ripoff the price someone pays for a desk that has "studio" in the name. Very simple desk jacked up in the hundreds or thousands of dollars. I was blown away when I started doing searches.

Yes they're not cheap at all. I think sterling's entry level desks start around $1500 and for something similar in design and size to mine it would be in excess of $6000.

My "Studio Desk" is two aluminum saw horses and a bit wooden fire door laid on top. It's easy to transport when I move, it's cheap to buy, and it's very, very strong as it needs to support a huge amount of gear sitting on it. For the price it's hard to beat smile.gif The entire thing was under $100.

It's long enough to support my 27 inch, 47 inch, and 30 inch monitor setup. So I have three monitors running all the way across as well as my speakers/stands/lights etc. Best DIY solution I've yet found smile.gif

Indeed - I will take pics.

My friend came over to help me and we ended up drinking beers and playing guitar on my back porch - but he came up with a couple of really great ideas that I recorded so we can work on.

Anyway - it's not going to have a professional sheen to it - but I think it's going to be perfect for my needs.

Attached Image

So - this is the rough plan I drew up to take to the home improvement store. Figuring what pieces to cut out of (2) 4' x 8' boards - then picked out the wood.

After getting everything cut, I started with a coat of primer - and I'm glad I did because the paint is still soaking into the wood like a thirsty dog lapping up water. I should have put 2 coats of primer on.

I promise - when it's finished it will be much more interesting than just a shell.

Still painting.

It was so hot out there on the table I could see smoke coming up from the paint as soon as I rolled it down. Much cooler outside now and that area is in the shade.

Anyway - did some touchups on the big boards so they are much smoother now.

I really enjoyed having Todd's chat session going on in the background while working on this - and a major "HELL YEA" to Stacey D's band.

I got the base put together and secured - then I just put the top on to get a feel for everything.

I'll post a last pick once everything is set back up and in place. I want to hang some sort of rack in the back to keep cords nice and organized.

1st thought .what a beautiful studio
2nd - would that bare hardwood floor leave sound bouncing all over that room, making nearly impossible to mix correctly

NICE!!!! Looking great!! Super Congrats! smile.gif One little tip, pull the sub away from the wall/backing a bit when placing it and also perhaps move it out from under the desk. The area under the desk may act like a big resonator and over emphasize the bass and result in mixes that end up sounding thin. Place the sub away from the wall and even on a stand if possible. Don't put it in a corner either or the you'll get the same over bass. Sub placement can be a pain but it's worth it smile.gif
