Very nice Lurgen .
I first read the post as 'my wife has bought me a 57 Strat...' - missed the Re-issue at first and I was going . Great guitar and I'm sure you'll have hours of fun with it. I've seen the Ice Blue in a shop and it is a cool finish. Enjoy. Cheers, Tony -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. Well guys (and girls), I'm pleased to say that the guitar arrived this afternoon and I love it. The pictures capture the colour almost precisely, and it truly is unplayed. I actually doubt it has even been tuned up before arriving here, it is that new. All the protective stickers were still on it (and still are, not taking them off until later this weekend), and every possibly tag, accessory, manual and piece of documentation was included. Boy am I pleased. I might actually have to put together a proper review of this guitar once I'm more familiar with it. For now, first impressions... Setup from the factory stunned me. I've played two Strat Deluxes in as-shipped setup and wasn't impressed. They were very mediocre. This thing though, it is setup pretty much perfectly. Action is exactly right, intonation is mostly right but close enough that you can't complain (esp. after being shipped cross-country). The V Neck is everything I remembered it to be - makes me wonder why the C neck is so popular right now, because this is much more comfortable in my hands. To answer Gilmore's question, the pickups are quite different to the standard Strat pickups. Or at least, they are very different to my Highway One's pickups, which I think are roughly the same. I was worried it'd be noisy, but it isn't. It's dead quiet. A little more hiss than the Highway One, but a lot less noise from surrounding electrical devices. The pickups alone really amazed me, even more so than the Clapton-edition Strat I messed with last week in the store. The body is pretty close to the modern body shape though, but constructed differently (different wood, different finish, etc). Also, the output power isn't any different to any other Strat (and noticably lower than my Maton). In fact, in terms of noise it is brilliant. With only a 3-way selector I'm stuck working with only one pickup at a time. On my Highway One (and my shockingly awful SX) that would mean noise. Maybe not a lot of noise, but enough to bug me. This is still silent on a single pickup only. The real surprise though is the tone. The sheer depth of it. For a single-coil, vintage set of pickups, I'm hearing some serious improvements in tone compared to my other guitars, and I'm a newbie. Seriously, I've been playing for just under a year so if I can hear a substantial difference then I figure there must be something big going on. I played the same song once on the Highway, once on my Maton, and then once on the '57 and I think the '57 blows both of them away. I'm also pleased to say that the sustain on this one is better than expected. The finish is nice, but I think that if I were the one painting it I'd have gone a shade or two darker. Still, it is extremely nice to look at. The "vintage" effect that is applied to the parts really completes the look however I was disappointed to discover that the pick guard is pristine white. Not vintage looking at all. Oh, and I found one annoying thing - I can't (easily) identify the build year. Because so few vintage Strats are made (compared to the rest of the range) their serial number isn't easily traced to a year. Mine could theoretically be as early as 2002 based on the copyright date in the manual. I won't know for sure until I take the neck off, which won't be until I have it professionally setup and adjusted (and get the 5-way selector installed). So all up, I'm a happy camper. This is a keeper. Great guitar. Highway Ones pickups are crap... don't compare this to those... hehe The hiss means it's working The pick guard is designed to discolor quickly over time. The finish is designed to wear quickly (don't be shocked if you've worn through it in a few years). Go to Fender website and look up the serial number coding... you can determine the exact year that way (or remove the neck and look at the date stamp). Fenders aren't known for their sustain due to their bridges (unless you got a true Hardtail bridge) so you probably got a good piece of wood. Keep it till you die... that guitar is awesome! I was so happy with this guitar today that I went out and bought it a friend - a Fender Hotrod Deluxe valve amp. Man, am I in heaven this weekend!
On the subject of dating, Fender doesn't provide serial-number vs. date lookup tables for Vintage models. Not very nice of them. But I did find this post on the Fender forums that narrowed it down to a 2005-2007 build. Vinivitur, it feels better than it sounds and it sounds awesome ;-) Thanks for the feedback people, expect some new reviews from me to turn up in coming weeks. -------------------- Guitars: Fender American Vintage 1957 Stratocaster, Fender American Highway One, Maton MS2000 Deluxe
