Does anyone know what kind of efx pedals are best for a jcm 2000 dsl? I had the new zoom gtt9 but i couldn't get it to sound as good as the amp by it's self. I'm looking for somthing that dosen't take away from that tube sound that marshall is famous for but gives some efx for some covers. Can anyone help?

what kind of efx are you looking for? The TC electronics pedals are all great, the nova system is a great multi-effect pedal and is relatively inexpensive compared to the full G-system...I would steer clear of the Boss GT and PodXTs for use with a nice tube amp, I find they are OK but they are really better for home use/recording with all the amp modelling etc...Personally I use individual pedals, it gets a bit pricey but it's worth it when you have a few really nice pedals to complement your amp and guitar's tone that you already like...that's just my opinion of course... for me a good overdrive like a tube screamer/ocd/bb preamp, a nice delay pedal, I prefer amp reverb over pedal reverb usually, and some type of chorus and flange/phaser (there some multi effect modulation pedals for this), and that's all I really need personally...plus tuner and noise suppressor, but I don't really think of those as efx

What kind of FX pedals are you after mate: chorus, flanger, phaser, delay? Normally you would put the all of those in the FX loop of the DSL. I don't think the pedals will take away the tube sound, but digital effects will sound digital, as oposed to analog ones. Some analog FX pedals tend to suck tone a bit, so you have to watch what you buy. Give us some more info so we can give you some specific advises mate.

I'm looking for just a little delay for sanctuary by the cult and some flange (i think?) for zz top,nazereth,aldo nova. this is my first pro amp, so going from a digital amp with all the efx built in to a marshall. A big difference! I'm trying to play all of the songs i used to play without efx, but they need a little som-som. Thanks for your advice VERY helpfull and could save me alot of cash $.


Should i be running the efx board through the efx loop on the back opposed to running through the guitar input. I'm playing covers so maybe alittle of everthing i"m not sure. We play mostly 80'S rock covers. I'm going from a line 6 to a marshall. What types an brands would you recomend Ivan? thanks for your help, your lessons are great too by the way!!

You said you had Zoom gtt9, so you sold it or som?

If not then you should just hook it up in FX Loop,
turn off drive/amp section
on it and use only effects like delay,flange etc.
Zoom is not a top notch brand for effects
but I'm sure it'd serve you pretty well.

I can recommend some pedals mate, cause I don't like multiFX units that much. Here are few suggestions that will not kill your budget but will get along great with your Marshall.

DELAY

Boss DD3:

Nice smooth sounding digital delay unit. Up to 800ms of delay. I had this unit and sold it cause i got DD20, but it did the job very nicely. I recommend this, it's a safe bet. It goes around 95-100$.

Electro-Harmonics #1 Echo

I haven't heard this unit live, but since EHX is famous by their great delay pedals, this should definitely be checked. Here's a great video review on their site.


FLANGE

Boss BF3

I don't have this unit, but have heard good things about it. You should check it out before you buy. Costs about 100-110$

Electro Harmonix Stereo Electric Mistress

I have this pedal for couple of months and it is a great one. It's a flanger and chorus in one, and you can make a lot of different sounds with it. It's a digital unit, but very warm sounding. It's in the BF3 price range. Here's a very good video review on the site.

You also said you like sound of your amp alone,right?
Bare in mind that FX Loop stage is AFTER preamp section of your amp,
which means no drive and such,turn it OFF!

Ya was told by the guy at the store to go through the guitar input. And in the manual it said to ajust the front panel a certain way. But i haven't tried the efx loop on the back. But i'm thinking that it's the board and the amp model presets that are built into it. the waw and volume pedals are mickey mouse to. I've read the manual front to back and i can't get the sound i want. I think Ivan is on the right track of what i'm looking for with individual pedals. I'll give it a try though, Thanks Muris! the zoom pedals come with instructions on how to get the best sound out of some of the most popular amps in the market: the jcm 2000, fender twin reverb, and roland jc-120

presence at 0
treble 2
mid 5
bass 4
tone shift off
gain at 2


should make it sound a little better but thats if you want to use zooms modeling system! like muris said, for just effects send it through the back..keep in mind, some effects might make you have to tweak with the amps EQ, and dont forget to turn off the drive, the EQ, and anyother effects from the zoom or else it wont work well!

I've got the Boss BF-3 Flanger and I can say that for its price it's absolutely mind-blowing. Only thing is it's not true bypass.

JCM 2000 DSL is powerful tube amp and imo
it's a shame to connect unit like gtt9 in front and use gain from it.
That kind a ruins your ton A LOT.
Guy at the store told you probably the easiest but not the best solution.
Try FX Loop and see how it sounds like,
remember to turn off drive on Zoom , should be working fine.

You should consinder a BOSS GT-10 using the four cable method. So GT-10 IN -> AMP IN -> AMP EFFECT SEND -> GT-10 -> AMP EFFECT RETURN. You can even use the GT-10 to switch channels on your amp. I like it

Yes, I agree with Muris, putting it in front is not a good thing. Since you are considering getting some FX pedals for the loop, you can try for now as a transition solution to get another cable and send the Zoom unit through the FX loop. Like Muris said, be sure to turn off all the modeling, like amp, cabs and all, and just make a preset with delay only, or chorus only and use it practically just as multiFX unit.
