All your entries sounds great but for my personal taste your video for "Jam of the month April" is the best one. smile.gif I love this video because has a catchy melody and the tone fit great with the backing. Also if I compare all your videos, on this one you built the tension in a very good way and this is one of the main things that should we care when we talk about composition.
In most of the cases, contests require a composition that sound as a song not as a jam. So, huge congrats for your work!!! smile.gif

Thanks for sharing the competitions!! This thread is a great way to keep a history of all of your competition entries. It's a great idea. Making a playlist on youtube for all of them is a good idea as well. It's great to be able to see your progress at a glance.

This is some of the best playing I've yet seen from you and it's great to see! Very melodic and has subtle technical bits as well. Very nice Solo!! Super congrats. Building a solo is the ultimate expression of what we are here to do IMHO and you are doing it well smile.gif

Thanks. I didn’t think about being technical of fast . I just tried making a solo that was complementary to the track. I have no intention of winning so I just had fun and enjoyed it.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 12 2020, 09:07 PM

That's as it should be smile.gif The first thing is that the solo should add to the track musically. If it doesn't do that, then it's a complete waste of everyone's time. Your solo is very musical. As a bonus, it also displays your technical ability that you've worked so hard on. Mucho congrats! It's great to see you coming up with solos!!! It's the reason GMC exists IMHO!

I'm working with a German band called ARKASA on a new track and I wish I could share the solo. It's one of my faves and it's not very "shreddy", it's very melodiic but serves the song well.

i was able to be abit more technical with this piece

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jun 14 2020, 05:32 AM

That first one is very creative indeed! I like the single handed licks, one with the left then another with the right. Both show solid control over power using a single hand. I can see little bits of bootcamp working in to your solo playing which is very gratifying. Congrats on pulling this solo together and keeping it interesting. Thats often the hardest part on solos longer than a few bars, just keeping the audience from getting bored is a huge achievement.

I like the second one as well. it's perhaps a bit more melodic in it's construction which is very cool. It seems like the first one is a bit more technically accomplished, but there is more to soloing than technique to be sure. I like em both!

NICE! I Enjoyed it quite a bit. I think I see some of the stuff we have worked working it's way in to your playing which is always great to see smile.gif This one is very melodic as well with some spiff shreddy bits to top it off. Where are you finding all these contests btw? I used to see them all the time, but recently they seem to have abated.

Thank you so much man, it really means a lot coming from a more experienced player like you!

I barely made the deadline so I had no time to fix the mistakes that lie here and there tongue.gif

But I do hope the judges will look beyond my errors hehe

Did you double the solo? It almost sounds like two takes layered on top one another? either way it sounds quite spiff and your bends are to pitch and it's well phrased. Is that guitar scallopped btw?

Your ear is correct; the solo is double tracked(L/R), that's why it sounds as if there is chorus effect.

Your eyes are also correct! The neck is semi scalloped (not so deeply scalloped like Malmsteen's).

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 19 2020, 08:21 PM

Doubling a solo is not something everyone can do. It's a great way to practice being able to play the same thing twice. It requires mentally mapping out the solo a bit and memorizing it and then playing right on top of the previous take. I dig doubled solos. They can sound much bigger and deeper.

I thought I saw a bit of a scallop smile.gif The tone you are getting is great and well played!

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Randy Roads used to double track his solos.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 20 2020, 07:47 PM

Indeed he did! Randy was an amazing player. There have been many great players who have doubled solos. It does take a bit of prep as one has to play the same thing twice with the same timing, etc. I've doubled solos in the past and I really dig how it sounds. The subtle variations in both versions are what gives it depth. Sort of like doubling a vocal part. It takes a pretty high degree of skill to pull off. Impressive work!

Hope you dont mind I thought I'd embed it to share with folks. You even doubled the dive bombs! Nice.

On one solo with Ben Higgins I started doubling and about half way through one part, I broke away from the original as I had a better idea for a part. Then I listened back and it oddly worked as it was. It sounded like one solo and then the parts diverge and sort of harmonize and split left right then come back together when I start back on the original part. I'm doubling during the open string lick then break off in between and then come back. Almost sounds like a delay effect.

Oh definitely man, doubling solos sounds different (in a nice way) but they are very strict; one small divergence/mistake and it will definitely be heard hehe

For sure you can share the video, no problem biggrin.gif

I can really feel the Gilbert vibe on your video!!

And on one of your videos I think I spotted a blue PGM with pink f-holes?

That guitar was my dream guitar when I was a teenager; I am such a Gilbert fan boy, and I really love his models with the bright neon colours of the 80s era biggrin.gif

Good eye!!! Yup that's a pgm complete with pink F holes smile.gif It was a very fun guitar. Like many in my collection, somebody offered way to much money for it and I had to accept. i do miss here though. I'm always on the lookout for one to replace her. Played great! Neck was a bit thicker than I expected but nothing too crazy. Here is a one handed guitar solo I did on that axe. Gotta say it almost played itself. Very light string tension and great sustain. Responded to even the lightest touch. The only other guitar that I've played along that line is my ancient rg560.

Yeah I've read that their necks are huge, but then again, Gilbert's hands are gigantic biggrin.gif

Same thing with Wylde's Gibsons; a few people I know, bought one and did not like the thickness of the neck.

Gilbert has crazy huge hands for sure. Also his pinky is as long as his first finger! He has crazy long fingers which helps him quite a bit. He probably needs the thicker neck just to have it to counter balance his gigantic hands smile.gif Some folks say the thicker necks aid in tuning stability and sustain, but I've never been a big fan of thick necks. I had always wanted to try a PGM, like you, I'd see Paul ripping it up and wanted to try one ever since. It was a fun guitar, but a bit too different than what I'm accustomed to.

I wonder if Zakk's own line of guitars have thick necks as well? I'm guessing yes smile.gif Some folks like that baseball bat feeling! I'm just not one of them.

I also always wanted a scalloped guitar. I tried a cheap chinese knockoff once, but I don't think that was a good example. Didn't keep it very long.

My cousin has the Malmsteen model so I got to try it a few times.
At first it feels weird because there is no wood under your fingers biggrin.gif
Also your tips of your fingers get slashed way easier and faster.
But the more you play with it, the more you get accustomed, and oh my God, bending and vibrato is soo much easier!

I've searched for years and have yet to see a real Yngwie fender in a guitar shop. I figured I'd have run across one by now. No such luck. I thought they were fairly common guitars. Maybe I've just missed them in the store. Still want to try one smile.gif our found KRIS DAHL has a scalloped guitar and he works wonders on it. I've always liked big tall frets that give a semi scalloped feel. I'm still on the lookout for a scalloped Ibby smile.gif

Check out Warmoth website; they make some great stuff, and have tons of options!
My sea-foam green guitar is entirely made from Warmoth and it has those tall frets you mentioned.
For way less, you get a custom shop guitar with the specs you want.
Their customer service department is very helpful and help you understand all the little details about necks/bodys etc.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 22 2020, 07:51 PM

I"ve always liked the warmoth line. I replaced a neck on an old Kramer with a warmoth at one point and the guitar played way better. I thought the stock neck was fine until I put a warmoth neck on it.

Did you have your axe scalloped after you got it or did you get it that way?

The scalloped neck was build from scratch from a local guitar luthier.

The Warmoth neck is not scalloped but I put very tall frets so it feels as if it is scalloped.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 24 2020, 04:29 AM

Thats very cool. That's a good luthier that can build a good scalloped neck from scratch. Some folks call themselves luthiers but they are really guitar techs. Luthiers can actually work with wood and steel to create something amazing. I've got big frets on both my ibanez guitars but they were stock. Some of the newer budget ibbys have frets that feel a bit smaller. The pricey ones still use the jumbo frets which is always a good thing imho smile.gif

I've been enjoying your youtube channel btw. Some very spiff solos on there!

Yes you are right; most people are more of a guitar-tech who can fix various problems on the instrument biggrin.gif

But the guy I am telling you about makes guitars from scratch; you can select whatever woods and specs you like and he will make it for you.

It's a very convenient custom shop you can just walk in on any day, and browse around, pick up stuff, and if he likes you, you might even get a lesson on how things are made smile.gif

I don't think you can do that on Fender's or Gibson's custom shop haha

Thank you so much for checking the videos out! I was bored during the 3 months quarantine so I was trying to pass my time by doing those videos hehe

It's true there is a MASSIVE amount of competition these days. Still each solo you play makes you a better player and let's other people see what you are about! So keep it up!!

Thank you so much for your kind words. I will keep trying improving as much as time allows it hehe
Chances of winning these competitions are slim biggrin.gif
There are so many great bedroom guitarists out there, but it's fun nevertheless!

So I have stumbled upon this competition, and it must be the toughest backing track to improvise on!!

Thats the most complex backing track I've ever heard in a contest. They usually make it a bit easier so that everyone can get in on it. This one is going to take serious thought and effort imho, in order to sound like it belongs with the backing. But a challenge can be a good thing smile.gif

Here is another competition with a more guitar-friendly backing tracks tongue.gif

This one is nice since you get to choose which backing track you want to play along with!
