This site is awesome - keep up the good work!

I'd like to request a lesson in the style of Larry Carlton, one of my favorite guitarists. He's got an incredible touch, tone, phrasing, and fluidity to his playing, and his solos are always very tasty and full of emotion. Part of the secret to his sound is his unique use of the volume pedal to make his notes really sing.

For those who aren't familiar with him, his style is a blend of jazz, blues, and rock. He won a Grammy as co-writer of the theme to "Hill Street Blues", the 80's American police drama, and has been nominated for a bunch of others. Prior to his solo career, he was a top studio guitarist, doing over 3,000 studio sessions by the early 80's. Some of his most famous guitar solos were on "Kid Charlemagne" and "Don't Take Me Alive" by Steely Dan. You can see a video clip of him performing these live here:
Larry Carlton - Live 1988
[The first section is the "Hill Street Blues" theme, followed by the Kid Charlemagne solo (starting at 1:12) and Don't Take Me Alive (starting at 2:36) ].

He's also got a video section on his website. Check out his inspirational story:

Go to http://mr335.tv/ , then under Channels click on 'About Mr 335' (his nickname) and scroll down to 'The Shooting' and 'New Perspective'. Awesome.

Anyway, I'd love for one of our esteemed GMC instructors to do a lesson in the style of Larry Carlton. Perhaps Gabriel or Muris? cool.gif

By the way, Larry also did an all-instrumental version of "Layla", by Eric Clapton. Phenomenal! It's on his "On Solid Ground" album:

Many thanks!!

MattG

Wow...I agree. I'd never heard of him before this, but he sounds really good. I also think that there should be an In The Style Of Bang Camaro Lesson.

It's funny - I actually got turned on to Larry Carlton many years ago through an interview with Vinnie Moore (the Shrapnel shredder). He mentioned Larry C. as one of his favorite players, so I knew I had to check him out. I like a lot of different guitar players, but there's no one quite like Larry. He's just got such a soulful style...

Carlton's an awesome player - apart from the stuff already mentioned I'd like an 'in the style of' The Lord's Prayer and the other acoustic/chordal melody stuff he's done.

QQ - isn't he potentially the one guitarist most people have heard - and probably liked - but never realised (Kid Charlemane, Hill St Blues, Don't Take Me Alive) ?

Chers,
Tony

Tony,
Yes, he's probably the most "well-known unknown" guitarist there is. According to the bio on his website, he's played on over 100 gold records in his career!! And he's as good an acoustic guitar player as he is electric. I certainly wouldn't mind seeing several "in the style of" lessons on him!
