GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ What Is An Semi Acoustic Eletric Guitar?

Posted by: Martin la guitarra Jun 2 2008, 04:10 PM

Well, been into buying a new guitar. The guitar should be easy to bend. I dont want a nylon stringer, as its more for classical studies - im more into blues.

The reason why i don't want the eletric guitar is that its not portabel, and the sounds is a little too much for me. I'm more into the clean sounds from a acoustic guitar or an eletric guitar (with clean sound - although again, its not portabel and i want to easily move from A to B.

My question is: is there any type of guitar fulfilling my desires?

Question 2: What is a semi acoustic eletric guitar?

Cheers

Well, a semi acoustic guitar is a type of electic guitar which have a sound box and electric pickups.
You can check the Epiphone Emperor or some Rickenbackers wink.gif

In terms of bending, there are several factors that will affect how easy is to do it. Since you want to bend easy there are 2 things I think you should consider:
- The less tension you have, the easier to bend. Lighter gauge strings help on that. On the other hand you have to bend more to achieve the same note. So you have to test a little bit before deciding what is your ideal
- guitar with floating bridges (floyd rose) are easier to bend (because the bridge is not fixed and reduces the tension). However if you bend and then hit another note you will sound off (unless you learn how to compensate that, which takes some time to learn).

I would say semi-acoustic guitars are kind of electric guitar, but with a hollow body so that it have a tone more close to acoustic guitars.

I'm not sure I totally understand the question but it kinda sounds like you're talking about the Micheal Kelly Hybrid or something similar...

What I mean is: is the semi acoustic eletric guitar just like an acoustic guitar, you can play without plugg it in a amplifier. That you still have a acoustic sound even though there is no electricity going.

If you wanna bend and play the blues I recommend semi-hollow electric guitar.

semi acoustics are great for blues, basically an acoustic archtop with pickups and electronics on it, exactly like it sounds. there havent been as many different kinds of semi acoustics as solid bodies for the last few decades, but there are still millions out there. Get a nice one! biggrin.gif

they look something like this too-
