I am making a bunch of guitar videos for fun, just to throw up on instagram and have some fun with it. I have been using my iPhone X for my video... and really my audio too. But, as you can guess, the audio sucks. I have a few thoughts, and questions.

Worth mentioning that I have a Behringer Audio Interface, cheap but it works for me. And a DI Box.

1. First off, I have the Peavey 6505 Mini Head, and it has a Mic Simulated Direct Interface. Im wondering if there is a way for me to use that to go directly to my audio for my clips. Let me know if there is a way.

2. I have the Blu Yeti mic, but I cannot seem to get it to work with my iPhone. My wife tried using it for a Smule Karaoke app, and the same thing, we just couldn't get it to work. Any tips or suggestions?

3. Are there any mics out there that you would recommend that would be able to stand in front of my speaker and also plug into my iPhone some way?

As far as I understand you don't want to deal with the computer but capture everything in one go with the phone correct?

cause the best sound would be using your soundcard (connecting the mic. and amp head's output) but then you'll have to transfer the video to the computer and combine audio and video with a program.

Sure!!! Here is one for about $99. It's from Zoom and it's a condenser mic. It's easily as good as most mics you'd find for studio use in that price range.

This is what is sooo cool about the iphone IMHO. It's a minicomputer that is built for Music/Video. Plenty of processing power, on board storage, good camera, etc. Buying this same mic capsule on a zoom recording would run you about $350. This add on uses the same recording technology in zooms other field recorders, but uses your phone as the brains.Since you already have the iphone, you just need the mic! The iphone/ipad is a great production platform.

Also, this mic lets you record video at the same time and use the audio from the mic. the audio/video is then synched up in real time and you have a high quality video with high quality audio that you can upload/edit/export/etc.



While we are on the topic, I'd also suggest you look in to the TONE SHIFTER 3S device. It works as an audio interface on your iphone and on your computer. It's also a midi switcher which can switch patches on your iphone when you are using Amplitube or any other app. Turns your iphone in to a complete production platform. You can run a guitar cable from the Tone Shifter, out in to your amp, set your amp on the clean channel and then use the Amplitube app just like an AXE FX. You get no patch gaps, and it sounds great.

@Todd Simpson, AWESOME! I was looking at that exact mic. I have the iPhone X, and want to simply throw on a mic, put my phone in a tripod, and use the plain ol "camera" app. I wasnt sure if I should get a better mic, to set right next to the speaker, or if this would do the trick. I was close to buying that mic. I might just do it now. Could you perhaps, now that you know I have the iPhone X, recommend a few other mics that might do the job?

Happy to help!! I'm a big fan of iphone as a production platoform
The SHURE product is a fine mic as well. Anything you can buy locally, say at a walmart,
is a good thing as you can try it and return it if you don't like it. Using a mic in the room "room mic" gives a "room tone" as opposed to direct micing a cab which sounds more like the cab, than the room. Try both and see what you think Here is a selection of about 30 options. Each has it's merit, but I'd say one of the small, snap on condenser mics is your best bet!

Yup, you can use the camera app and the external mic. You can then share the vid on youtube or instagram directly from your phone which is pretty darned handy!!!

Keep in mind that you can use an extension cable to put the mic in front of your cabinet and then point the phone in a different direction to get a better camera view Full on Audio/Video, synched to a file and ready to share.

Just connect it to the lightning port on your phone with something like an Apogee Jam. Its a a quick and simple way to get great sounding guitar audio into your phone.

The jam is an audio interface, sort of like the behringer but with lightning connection ability.
It would work just fine though as alternative to the Microphone idea. Just run a cable out of the back of the peavy head using the cab sim out and in to the input of the Apogee Jam or irig or any similar solution. The TONE SHIFTER 3s (product I mentioned earlier in the thread) would also work just fine in this regard, though it is a bit more expensive.

The the zoom is only $99, as is the apogee Jam. The toneshifter is about $250, but also offers more I/O, and is a midi foot switch as well, turning the iphone in to a live ready rig instead of just providing a way to record to the phone. IK multimedia has a product jus like it now called the Stomp IO which we talked about in another thread. It goes about $300, in pre order.

Your ipad can also work with your laptop. If you need a second monitor to take with you while you are adjusting a microphone or you are recording something out of reach of your computer, you can use your ipad/ipod as a second wireless monitor to control your main computer via touch screen!! here i am using REAPER on my computer but controlling it all with my ipad!! Handy!! You can get an ipad 2 for $100.



Many music apps are free! AMPLITUBE (with a is free to use and comes with great bits for example and has ZERO patch lag! If you are looking for a great sounding alternative to an AXE FX/ETC. This is a great option IMHO.



Also there is a new app called AURIA PRO which is a full featured DAW made to run in the iipad. It's as good as any other daw I've ever tried. Full on production, without the need for a computer. There really is not excuse anymore to not have a recording setup given the low cost of entry and quality tools.
