Steinberg CI2
Two-channel XLR combo interface equipped with two sophisticated microphone preamps and phantom power, one HI-Z for direct guitar input and a footswitch connector for Interactive Recording. This is seconded by the controller section featuring the innovative AI Knob that provides intuitive control due to seamless integration into Cubase. You now have all the tools in a single box to help you with whatever recording and production project you may have in mind. It also includes Cubase AI 5! This looks very nice, and Steinbergs new soundcards have no latency and is very easy to use. For someone in the market for a new, good and portable audio device, this could be the way to go Check it out HERE! Native Instruments - Guitar Rig 4 Pro Native Instruments has announced Guitar Rig 4 Pro, the next generation of its guitar studio. NI says that the fourth version "raises the bar on sonic authenticity with advanced new speaker emulation technology, and further expands on nearly all aspects that sets Guitar Rig apart as the most capable digital guitar solution". Guitar Rig 4 ProTo bring the authenticity of Guitar Rig to the next level, the new version introduces advanced cabinet and microphone modeling, providing an enhanced organic tone based on latency-free convolution technology. The advanced speaker emulation is also the basis for the versatile new "Control Room" module, developed in collaboration with leading German studio guitarist and recording expert Peter Weihe. This new module allows users to freely mix and match up to eight phase-aligned studio microphones for each cabinet, allowing an unlimited range of high-end studio recording tones. To further expand its arsenal of modeled amplifiers, Guitar Rig 4 Pro offers two additional tube amp models that include the hot-rodded "Hot Plex" and the energetic "Jump", both based on Native Instruments' Dynamic Tube Response technology. The arsenal of effects in Guitar Rig is complemented with two new delay units and two new flavors of reverb, bringing the overall number of included effects to 48. It is also a part of the new Komplete 6 pack! Check it out HERE! I'm gonna try out Guitar Rig 4 for sure, looks awesome and the demos sound great |

The Steinberg does looks interesting, but it is only 2/2 interface, and for that money you can get EMU 0404USB. Which again doesn't have Cubase AI5, and controller knob, so who really needs it (and does not need more than 2 inputs) this could work nicely.
Can't wait to test the GR4, I hope they put in the impulse cab modelings. Their cab modeling was a bit bad always. -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

As Ivan says, you can get EMU 04/04 instead, I will say that it will be hard to beat the soundquality of EMU, since I think its the best budget card by now. GR4 will be interesting, i have ran both GR2 and GR3, which I dont believe is so different. You can get a pretty good sound out of it, but i think that GR miss some response and is a little bit "flat". I use GR for fast recordings, where it works great, but for a professional result I will go for the real stuff any day in the week.. but maybe GR4 gonna change that?

As Ivan says a key feature of the C12 is that it integrates with Cubase and so not only acts as an audio card but also as a hardware controller for Cubase so you don't have to do everything with a mouse. I think that the C12 also has a 'big brother' version that includes 8i/o. For anyone who uses Cubase (and probably Nuendo) this could be a great benefit.
Integration is a big thing as it can save a lot of time and a lot of headaches trying to work out why things aren't working. The C12 also reduces the footprint by combining the audio card and hardware controller. If you're pushed for desktop space this can be an issue and it probably makes for a neater and tidier work space as well. Integration isn't new and tbh others have done it for other sequencers at least as well. For those of us that don't use Cubase there are plenty of other audio cards and controllers around - though you could probably map the C12 controllers to any other sequencer anyway... We use a specialised controller/audio i/o for our sadie 5; we also map both our digital desks to control our other sequencers and also use a Tranzport for remote work. Either way, for those of us who already have an audio card that they are happy with then a different controller is probably a more economic choice than the Steinberg one. Anyone who hasn't and uses/wants to use Cubase it looks like a good option. (Just don't anyone mention Houston .) Keilnoth - NI vsts are usually regarded as some of the best. Kontakt is one of the best samplers around, perhaps the best one imho now that Giga is no more. Battery - nice drum sampler but depends on how you work. Other stuff from NI - Absynth, Pro5 are nice synths though there are plenty of others to chose from; Reaktor is wonderful but you have to spend quite a lot of time to get to know it. -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. I like the hands free recording option of the CI2. That's smart thinking!
