A Les Paul Question :]

I've finally made it into the site! I was trying to find a friend with a credit card, or a cheaper way to send the money and now it's done. It really feels great!

Now.. The thing i wanted to ask is about Les Paul guitars. I need an advice because i plan to buy one. From all I've heard and touched this is the dream guitar. But the problem is i can't affort to buy a Gibson Les Paul. And it would be kind of stupid because all this live music is very underground here in Bulgaria, and we don't actually have a Club or a place which has an even good sound.
That's because there's some stupid "music" called "Chalga" that's taken over the majority of the bulgarian scene. But that's not the most important thing right now...
And I was saying that it would be great if someone with experience in Rock music and especially Les Paul guitars can give me an advice on which Les Paul to buy. I need a cheaper one(damned money problems) but still sounding good. I talk about around 550-600 Euro as an absolute maximum.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. I hope you guys can actually understand what I want, cause i'm not very good at explaining things, and using english just worsens the situation :]

Hi Hristan and welcome!

I am not the expert but I am sure one will be along shortly smile.gif

As I see it you have a couple of choices:

1. Les Paul Studio - this is a cut down version of the LP in that it doesn't look as fancy as a standard, but by all accounts plays very well. This may be a little out of your price range, but is half the price of a regular Les Paul

2. Epiphone are a company owned by Gibson and they make a variety of Les Paul copies, some of them are very good although not quite as good as the real thing - these are definitely in your price range.

Ok, I'll make way for someone who has actually owned some of these now smile.gif

My Epiphone Les Paul Standard is absolutely fantastic. I love the quality and sound out of it--I've never had any problems with mine. The standard pickups are pretty good for a variety of music, and they won't need replaced unless you want some seriously hot and heavy metal pickups.

Hi Hristian,
take a look at this - might help as it list quite a few Gibson LPs and copies and gives an indication of retail European prices. I'm not advocating you use Thomann although I believe they are ok and I think they deliver within Europe for free.

An Epiphone like Andrew says is a great LP type guitar and within your budget but also consider the PRS SE, ESP Ltd etc. I'm afraid that 600 euros would just about get you the bottom end of the Gibson range and personally I'd recommend that you get a good Epi or PRS etc rather then a bottom of the range Gibson.

Cheers,
Tony

Wow that was quick! :]
Thanks guys for everything!
And Andrew did you mean a Gibson LP Studio or a Gibson Epiphone LP Studio?
Because I've seen the Epiphone LP Customs for which the only thing I know is the great way they look(but that is of no importance to me - the important thing is the sound to be beautiful). And I know that they're somewhere in my price range so can some one tell me about them.

Sry for the stupid questions. I know it's best to go out and try one, but here in Bulgara there is no Gibson/Epiphone dealer. :/

I don't know about that. Gibson LP studios are nice. And Gibson has high resale value. I don't know what Ebay access you have in Blugaria, but I got my first Les Paul on ebay, used, and have been very happy with it. It is a studio. Just make sure that whoever sales it to you guarantees that the neck is in top shape, no twists, good working truss rod, no problems with the frets. I would make sure of that, if they won't guarantee that, money back, I would not buy a used guitar from them.

Not saying that is your best bet here, just an option, used Gibson LP Studio. Look at Gabriel's lessons to see a black one. I like the black ones. I see them on sale on Ebay going for a decent price sometimes.

and I had another not-as-important les paul question.

Why havn't floyds been fitten into les pauls? or atleast, how come I've never seen one around? It just seems like tha natural order of things. take an awesome guitar, put a floyd on it thus making it more awesome.

Well this is the only way I can buy a Les Paul, but the point is that i need to know what kind of Les Paul would be best for this money, because here this is a lot of money. I work 3 months for 600 Euro(I'm a little above the average payment here..). Make it 5 or 6 'cause i have to eat, pay my education.. I just don't want to spend a half year's savings on something that isn't going to be what I want(the deep Les Paul sound in this case).

Andrew, just saw your post. Well if it's the best choice i'll save a bit more to get a Studio. We'll see.

Thanks again to everyone for helping :]

Just to clarify my comment before...

A Gibson LP Studio UK in Europe is about 1600Euros ( ohmy.gif ) - ie double the US price - the best you might be able to do is a shop soiled Vixen or Special. That's what I was referring to as the bottom end of the range rather then the Studio, and even then you'd have to haggle hard as they sell for about 1000Euros new. Nothing against the Vixen or Special but they are very much more down to individual taste imo - people seem to love them or hate them...

Cheers,
Tony

I think most of us buy a LP for tone and sustain. (Let's bypass the discussion that you can get good sustain and tone from other guitars just for now smile.gif ). FR's reputedly, rightly or wrongly, suck tone. Further they normally require a fair bit of routing to fit. Neither of which routinely seems to fit with the ethos of a LP.

I have an FR fitted to my Custom LP JUnior/Special and to minimise routing the neck was deliberately set differently so that the FR's base plate floats above the body and only the block is routed in.

Cheers,
Tony

Well to get started - it's the worst thing happened to music ever. It's the reason the biggest bulgarian bands play in some "holes" with terrible sound, to a massacre because none of our places can fit all of us(100-150 people..) I talk about punk, oi, ska, hardcore, metalcore, trash, death metal, melo-death scenes(actually around here all these styles form 2 scenes that are strongly mixed(cause of the lack of bands, concerts and etc.)). All my favourite music is f**cked up by Chalga.

Well that was one way to describe what it is. In a musical way it's mainly major music in odd timings with some oriental kind of sounding. It's with 99% women as vocals. The only criteria are the big boobs and nice ass. All of them are like pornstars(the main reason it's the mainstream in here..) Oh and the lyrics. You take "I, You, Love Betrayal, Broken, Heart, Sex" mix them in any order and you'll get a Chalga song that's a hit around here.

Well you should've got the idea :]

Tony, I think I'll aim for an Epiphone. The Only way I'll get a Gibson is second hand and I don't want 'cause a minor problem in the griff can spoil the whole guitar(tuning).

Much the same but you have concerts, you have bands, a musician can live by music. Here everyone works to be able to do what he loves(music). Among all of the music styles i mentioned before there are no bands can live by the money they get. In most cases you don't even get money.
And there are very few people who would work all day and then try to write music, organize concerts and etc. And very few of these very few have money for repetitions and concerts.
The reason for all of this is this damned mainstream. 'Cause in our case here it kills other kinds of music.

P.S. wow just realised we turned this one into mass offtopic :]
Well at least I thought of one way to solve my problem. When i have money I'll go on several lessons given by teachers who have different Les Paul guitars. It's some option atleast :]
