To me it sounds like you're damping too hard and maybe angle the palm away from the trem. That in combination with low output pu's which I myself find harder to make a good muted sound from.
Higher out put pu's would help get a distinctive palm muting sound. For a practice sound try tuning down the treble to 0, mid to 12 o clock and full bass. Add some presence (how odd it may sound but it helps to not make it totaly bassy) just up to 9-10 o clock. And add lots of gain/drive. Works well on clean too but with gain the sound gets really punchy and gives a good feel for when palm muting is done correctly. Hope it helps :-) -------------------- My bands homepage
