Hi, i was wondering if the type of pickups affected Palm Muting, Single-Coil or Humbuckers. my guitar only has single coil and in Video 2 of Gabriel's Megadeth lessons, the whole section is played with PM, but when i do it i can barely hear it. So i was wondering, are Humbucker Pickups better for PM?

thank you.

Well, generally a Single Coil can produce a good PM Sound as any Humbucker can, it depends on the brand really, But Humbuckers produce a thicker sound usually, which in turn, provides a better PM Sound.

Other factors:

--Which pickups you use, how many at a time you use
--How hard your palm is pressing down, where your palm is
--Amp Settings, this has a big effect on your sound of course

i mostly (90% of time) use the Bridge Pickup alone, Single Coil. I dont know what brand are they, I assume they are Fender, but im not sure. I have a Squier Strat. When i Palm Mute, my palm rests completly on the strings, this isnt a problem with the 6th string, because it sounds great. But with the 5th and 4th...i can barely hear them. Maybe i should life my palm a little?

You could try, but if its just the higher strings, it usually is either like you said, your pickups, or if you just mess around a bit with the settings of your amps and any pedals oyu have, you might be able to get a more noticeable sound.

If he doesnt answer here, I think it was MickeM Who know alot of stuff about Amps, pedals, and guitar equipments and accessories, maybe he knows if it could be your pickups.

Humbucker's are better period. biggrin.gif Ofcourse some will disagree with me but i dont like single coil's.There noisy and thin sounding. It all depends on what type of music you play.Humbucker's are definatly best for megadeth or any style of metal like this.I had a duncan sh-6 put in my strat to replace single coil and man it was a new sounding guitar .I couldnt stand to use a single coil ever again.

To me it sounds like you're damping too hard and maybe angle the palm away from the trem. That in combination with low output pu's which I myself find harder to make a good muted sound from.
Higher out put pu's would help get a distinctive palm muting sound.

For a practice sound try tuning down the treble to 0, mid to 12 o clock and full bass. Add some presence (how odd it may sound but it helps to not make it totaly bassy) just up to 9-10 o clock. And add lots of gain/drive. Works well on clean too but with gain the sound gets really punchy and gives a good feel for when palm muting is done correctly.

Hope it helps :-)

Most of the times when you play palm muting sections and you can barely hear anything it just means that you are not doing it right. Its not really "muting", its more like dampening and your hand must barely touch the strings. It must just fatten up sound and not dull it.

Put your hand on the bridge with your palm just touching the strings. I had this problem also until one of my friends pointed it out.
