I would take a chord progression and a five fret chuck of the neck and practice playing through the progression in that space using which ever arpeggio shapes are there. It's what I would use in a playing situation, so might as well practice that way.
Then do it with the same progression and with the similar shapes up and down the neck. Paul Gilbert did a cool string skipping pachebel's canon type progression on Extreme Rock Vol 2 that's worth adding into your practice -------------------- My SoundCloud
