GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ Getting Antivirus Software

Posted by: IDontWantMyUsername Aug 31 2008, 01:16 PM

Well, now I am going to get antivirus software for my Macbook. I don't want anything expensive or complicated, and a friend of mine talked about a program called AVG. The only problem with that is that it's only made for Windows. Do you guys have any tips? tongue.gif

Norton makes a virus protection program for macs. As macs become more popular, virus protection will be necessary. Better to be ahead of the curve than behind...

I'd stay away from Norton, but that's my opinion. They are more bloated than most software, and they take over your system. mad.gif

I'd recommend http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-antivirus-mac-edition.html - it's excellent: low impact and really effective. wink.gif

I've never had virus on a Mac but as Black and White said you should be prepared because you never know. If big companies like Norton produce it already then there must be a reason for that. I use Norton 360 2.0 for Windows Vista and never had any trouble with virus. It's true that it takes up system resources and memory but at least you are protected. Just make sure your system and virus definitions are up to date and don't visit some suspicious sites and illegal download sources.

I use AVG and it is very good having in mind it's free. Don't know about the Mac version. It's actually not PC's fault it's Windows. Windows is developed in C which is a very "free" language and this is why it has so many faults.

About antivirus it is important to install it, but as Emir stated nicely, it is also very important to stay off the illegal sites, and spam mail. And always be careful where you enter your data. Check out the address in the browser bar, these days this is how people get cracked and their identity stolen.

I looked for the Avast one, but it costs money. I found this thing called ClamXav, anybody heard about it? Here's a link to the website: http://www.mac-net.com/fm.asp?id=www.clamxav.com%2F

Don't get me started! I am a programmer!! mad.gif tongue.gif

Let's just say that C gives you a lot of power and the freedom to shoot yourself in the foot however you like. C++ allows you to do so in more sophisticated ways. laugh.gif
