I figured this out about 5 mins ago...

this might be a widely known thing, but I've never seen it discussed here, and I think it's really cool

all you do is just play your high E string open with some obnoxiously loud distortion While facing your amp.

The High E note should resonate with the low E note, and if you go to mute the 5 thinnest strings you should find that your Thick E string is ringing quite healthily (IF its in tune, and even putting it a little out of tune dimishes the resonance greatly)

so next time you have to tune string to string by ear try this out

Let me know what you think!

Mmmm.....It dont need to be high gain distortion, I can do it with an acoustic guitar, personally I dont find it a reliable way, the string will vibrate even it is not in tune perfectly, more on simpatetic vibration: open B makes bass open E to vibrate so I become aware in classical guitar where the E was messing around all the time for no particular reason.

I do this all the time!
I find it's a lot easier to tune up an instrument using harmonics when distorted: the overtones jumps out. smile.gif

QUOTE ("Steve Vai")
Start by playing something - a bend, a riff, a scale, a song - very slowly; if you make a mistake, start over; do this over and over, until you can play it flawlessly - and I do mean flawlessly - many times in a row. Next, gradually increase the tempo. Eventually you'll be flailing like a madman.

Nice tip man, interesting way to tune the guitar, specially when without the tuner and on hi gain.
