- How many time have you been playing guitar?

I played guitar for a couple of years in my teens and then on and off (mostly off) over the past twenty years. This time around I have been practicing for about four months.

- Favorite guitarists, bands and musicians.

I like a wide mix of genres, but I particularly like a mix of goth, 80s metal and blues smile.gif

Fave Guitarists = EVH, SRV, Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Elmore James, Dan Patlansky, Andy Timmons, Dweezil Zappa
Fave Bands = Type O Negative, Seraphim Shock, Rammstein, Extreme, Danger Danger, Van Halen, Accept, Ratt,

- What are your guitar goals?

Break out of the standard pentatonic shape, learn to play solos that don't sound like I am playing scales in time with the rythmn! I'd also like to get to grips with the mixed rythmn and lead style that you hear in EVH, SR, Dan Patlansky and Nuno etc.

- How would you like to you see yourself in 5 years (related to music and guitar)?

I enjoy messing around with making digital music - I'd like to get good enough on guitar to incorporate it into my tracks and to get good enough at both playing and production to be able to share my creations with the world.

- How many time can you play guitar each day?

About an hour a day on weekdays and then 3 to 4 hours Sat and Sun.

- Do you have playing live experience?

Nope, don't have the confidence.

- Which are your strong and weak points with guitar?

I think I have half decent vibrato and finger strength, but I am stuck in the standard pentatonic scale shape and struggle with creating interesting phrasing.
Also, strangely I have never learned to play any songs - I have always just improvised on my own or over backing tracks :/

- What do you know about music theory?

Learnt some basic scales and how they relate to chords/arpeggios back when I was in school. I have been trying to teach myself recently and I am starting to get my head around modes. But my theory knowledge is very patchy.

- Can you record videos of you playing?

I will be able to by the end of the weekend smile.gif

- Share here audios and videos that reflect your current playing.

I am still trying to sort out recording with a webcam, but you should be able to hear me improvise noodling over a backing track here:

Improvisation over backing track

- Improvise over the same backing, focusing mostly on bending.

Exam and deadline:

By August 17th you'll have to share 3 videos:

Thanks for the schedule smile.gif

I am currently working through the Beginners Bending Workout and it is going well, except... when I try double stop type bends on my Gunslinger the tension pulls the Floyd Rose down and the second note goes out of tune. I have been trying to compensate for this by using my right palm to brace the bridge but it feels a little clumsy, is there a better way around this problem? or should I give up and use my Schecter that has a fixed bridge? smile.gif

mmm that's weird. I'm not a big fan of floyd rose. If you have a fixed bridge guitar go for it. But feel free to share a video of you playing the part with your floyd rose guitar to let me see and hear clearly what's happening.

Here's my take on the Beginners Bending Workout.

I will be having an epic session on the improvisation tomorrow night and should have the other two assignments uploaded by the end of Wednesday evening smile.gif

Here is my attempt at 'A video applying Ben's video approach over the backing track' hopefully I have correctly understood what you require smile.gif

I haven't managed to record a video of my improvising that I am happy with yet. If I haven't managed to get something I am satisfied with by about 7pm GMT this evening I will accept defeat and upload my best take so far for you to assess.

Hi mate! Great to see your 3 videos completed here!!

Based on your submits these are your results:

TASK 1: 3 coins

TASK 2: 1 coins

TASK 3: 3 coins

TOTAL: 7/10 coins.

This is just our first step here but I think that it has been a very intensive bending training. I notice that this technique still needs work since sometimes it's not consistent, other times you don't reach the correct pitch. The double strings bending at the end of the bending lesson is the most problematic part.

The improvisation will be our reference starting point. I'm sure that you'll see a lot of progress with the pass of time. It needs:

- more defined phrases.
- more consistent evolution of the solo.
- make the bends more natural. It sounds forced.

By the way, the assignment is passed! Congrats. I'll be back with the second assignment. In the meantime keep on practising this stuff!

Hi, thanks for the feedback smile.gif I wasn't happy with the improvisation myself, I normally do better - I think I need a lot more practice at improvising with major scales!

With regard to the double bends at the end of the bending lesson, I think I will try working through the piece with a clean tone a few times to try and make sure I bend exactly to the right pitch. I like the way my bends sounds in the video so I think maybe I am bending to what I like rather than what is correct if that makes sense? Once I think I have got the hang of it I will post a retake of the lesson in the REC forum for feedback.

I look forward to the next assignment smile.gif
