GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ The Wrong Chair

Posted by: SonofDestiny Aug 23 2008, 04:51 PM

Hey guys,

Just wanted to say something that may be pretty important. If you have a chair where you can rest your arms on: don't use it when playing guitar! Even if you're too lazy (like me) to get a decent chair, don't play on that chair and even if you're still too dumb (like me) to do, DON'T rest your arm on it. I've had problems with my arm for two months because of this.

Oh yeah, and another thing. Always check twice where your train is going to, especially at 1 AM, cause you might end up 200 miles from home with no way back if you don't... like I did last night. dry.gif

Okay that's all. Keep it in mind smile.gif

Some good advise here.
I've done that train-thing once... exept it was on a bus biggrin.gif

I have a chair that i can rest my arms on but i dont think that so much i just tuch it sometimes when i play but i dont have any problems.

I use a chair with armleans on, but when I play guitar I sit on a wierd way so I get away from the sides tongue.gif
I should find another chair to use when I play, so I can relax more though..

And for the train tip: That's why I never sleep on a bus or train tongue.gif

I have always tried to use chairs without armleans when I have played guitar, I see now that it has paid off smile.gif Hope you get better though. I do also think it's best to use a chair that is a little high when you play as it may better your sitting position when you play guitar. That's at least what my physical therapist told me tongue.gif

Thanks for the warnings man!! smile.gif
I recommend also getting a chair without armrests - for playing the instrument ! smile.gif
Hopefully I don't use trains here smile.gif

I had armrests on my chair but didn't even put them on when I got the chair and assemble it. Playing on this kind of chair is not too good.
I never practice on chair anymore tho, everybody knows that the most comfortable place to sit to practice is on the edge of the bed. biggrin.gif

I sit on my amp. biggrin.gif However, when I get home at my mum I´ll be sitting on a chair with armrests which I never use. The chair is already very old (about 15 years or so) and I like it because it´s really comfortable.

My chair has really thin padding and hurts my bum after an hour laugh.gif i always wonder what an ideal playing chair is!

When i sit on the edge of my bed- i slouch and my back aches sad.gif

It's a nice tip mate. Plus I hate chair with armrest because I always bang my guitar on to them!!

The chair I use is armless cool.gif

But about the train thing, that's rough. How did that work out...or did it? unsure.gif

Get a chair that let four feet touch the ground, also the place where you sit must be plain, and a cushion helps, but it mjust be a stiff one.

Something like this : http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Marshall-Guitarists-Stool-?sku=450421

Also maybe chairs for drummers would work nicely too..

Or if you want comfort and ready to make an investment something like this :

Taking it one step further - If you plan on performing(or already doing so) you really need to practice some and learn how to play standing up as its totally different than when playing in a chair. I had (And still do) have a hard time playing standing up(even with my foot popped up on a monitor or something) because I spent too much time learning guitar while sitting. Still can't figure out how you rockers can play with your guitar hanging low off your hip(Which looks way better than me playing my guitar higher on my chest), but my fretting wrist can't bend enough comfortably when playing the guitar slung low.

Yeah of course people need to practice standing sometimes..I suggest adjusting the strap so guitar stays in same position when sitting and standing up...That way you should not have any problems..

But the problem is if you adjust your strap to the same way as if sitting, your guitar rides pretty high when standing - This is what I do now. Just can't see how those guys can play with the guitar slung low off their hips(My fretting wrist can't bend like that and still reach the the low E and A strings)

Just curious more than anything else
