I randomly stumbled upon this vid of Yngwie and he talks about how he uses a slightly different picking hand position when he's just speed picking one note. My guess would be is that for extra speed, he angles his wrist outwards more, a bit like I demonstrated in my picking video a while back. For those interested, watch from about 3:08 onwards

What I like about this vid is that finally some top notch players say all important details instead of just showing exercises + I like when guitar player of this level can see the on and only truth " it works for him but doesn't work for me. Everyone has to find his way to execute it". It's very open minded mentoring and closes some bad habbits of 80's guitar lessons smile.gif

Yes I agree.. it's very important for guitar players to hear these things from established players. There is no ONE way, only your way smile.gif

Yeah, you can actually see he uses a combination of wrist and even his forearm shakes a bit when he's alternate picking.

For a lot of his multi string runs, he uses economy picking and hammer ons.

Great share here, Ben - and wise words. I've been meeting too many people that have bombarded me with the 'correct way' and another great one for instance - 'Petrucci is the only one who's holding the pick right' laugh.gif

Joking aside - I am amazed that Yngwie did this smile.gif He is usually saying 'It's easy... like this: .... shred shred shred'

Wou! Awesome find Ben. I think that Malmsteen's approach is very close to mine and it's the first time that I find that someone else explains it. It is really cool to see him analyzing more his playing, more than sharing licks.

Yes very similar.. he doesn't hold his wrist out quite as far as Eddie but it's the same mechanics judging by the look of it.
