GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Guitar Rig 5 Sounds Muddy

Posted by: zeus Dec 9 2011, 03:55 AM

Hi guys,

When using Guitar Rig 5, the tones don't sound all that great. I am plugging my guitar into an M-Audio Mobile Pre device. I increase the input gain about 20 db. The tones that I am getting from this software just are not as good as the ones I hear on YouTube or the ones I hear in the lessons on this site.

Also, the recorded sound from Guitar Rig sounds worse than what comes through the speakers (monitors). Am I missing something? I guess I could try to update to the latest ASIO drivers but I'm not sure if that will fix it.

Any suggestions?

Perhaps increasing input to 20dB created clipping? Try to monitor the input in your DAW software, and see if the metter is going above 0dB. It shouldn't go above.

Usually you have to really tweak these plugins, I remember it took me a while to get decent sounds from guitar rig, but I had to change a lot of things within it, make sure you have a noise gate, and not too much distortion

There's always Amplitube, which i thinks is better than guitar rig... try lowering the input in your audio properties, in windows 7 right click the speaker on the bottom right of the taskbar and select recording devices, then chose your input then select the levels tab, I've got mine set very low and don't get any problems in amplitube, if your thinking its ASIO drivers you could try ASIO4ALL which is FREE!!

As Ivan suggested I would back out of the preamp gain boost. The factory presets within GR should sound rocking.. I personally use GR4 now and it sounds bitchen. I use the ASIO driver and have not done any tweaking.

I'm new to all this recording stuff but I've been trying multiple things to see if it helps.

Now does it only sound bad when you increase the gain? Also are you using it to make it louder in sound? Because I've learned normalizing is my best friend. But this past Wednesday my friend was over I was like, I can record a guitar and make it louder and still be clean but it doesn't sound how a real song sounds to me, just sounds off. He told me to record a left and right track preferably 2 takes so its as if two people played them. From that you pan one to the left and one to the right. That helped my sound issue and quality a great deal.

The stock sounds may not be that hot. LIke Daniel, I had to really tweak it to get good tones. I also added a preamp and stopped using the Amp Head module and started using the SANS AMPish module instead. Also, I was using two control room modules to help with room tone and reduce the software"ish" sound.

All of the old preset should still work so try to import some sounds from my GUITAR RIG PRESET THREAD and see if you like any of them, or if they sound any better. Here is the link.
