GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Trouble With Low Pinch Harmonics

Posted by: X-Ray Jun 26 2008, 10:45 PM

Hey!

I have been playing guitar for three years now and I've been seriously practising for about 1,5 year. But I have a problem, I am basicly a metal gutiarist (even if I do play many styles) and I learned the pinch tecnique maybe a year ago and it was never any problem. Until I realized that it was possible to pinch on the 2 lowest (A and E) strings aswell.
But doing this just won't work for me, I've tried at another guitars and it seems to work ok but it just wont go on mine. Or I can accually sometimes make a octave or so but I'd like to do those crazy [poo] pinches that goes like 2 or 3 octaves.
I have a Ibanez Seven, Slipknot signature guitar with 0.11 (high E) strings, the other guitars I've tried all had 0.09.

Well, I'm grateful for any help because I'd really like to do this on my guitar.
Thanks

You are not alone. MANY players find this problem and i fortunatly found a way to do it a little while ago. Most people try to pinch harmonic while having their picking on an angle. This will work for the high strings but the lower string try playing it vertical to the string. It may take some practice at first because you have to turn your hand right around in that direction. Give it a try, now i can do pinch harmonics whenever i want on the low strings.

First of all, welcome!

I found it alot harder to do pinch harmonics on the lower strings, but with practise it came. That was on the cheap $100 guitar i still use today, so it is doable on any guitar wink.gif

From a gear point of view- maybe adding a little extra gain may help ? But being a mteal guitarist im sure yo have it cranked anyway..

On the lower strings i found the wrist action differed slightly, just try and see what you are doing on these other guitars and try to apply it to your own. Maybe, just maybe, the string gauge is giving you problems.

Practise practise!

The mick thompson signature is loaeded with active emgs I think? Active pu's make it easier to get a pinch harmonic.
It is strange but I can get pinch harmonics on the thickest strings easier than on the higher ones. Maybe try a heavier vibrato or thinner/thicker strings on your guitar...

Thanks alot for all the help, and thanks to you steve! Changing my picks angle to a more vertical "stance" made it possible for me to do it! Just going to practise alot now so I can do it easily on the thick strings aswell!

Awesome! happy.gif

For some reason i can only get pinch harmonics MOST of the time on the G string and D but that's about it
Some people say it depends on the gauge u use...I use super light and the guy at the shop said it's hard to get pinch harmoincs out of the highest and very lowest strings..IDK i was just asking huh.gif

basically, pinch harms are just finding the natural harm where there aren't frets. Natural harmonics are all over the strings, so just hold a note and try all over the guitar. You'll be amazed to find out they're eeeeeeeverywhere!

It's solely about position of picking it.
