If you are speaking of intervals of the major scale your summation is correct, when looking at diminished intervals we are using a non-scalier approach for the sheer purpose of reading notation, then the Professor is spot on...

Yep, G-C# is an Aug 4th, because you are raising the 4th note C by half step, and G-Db is a Diminished 5th as you are lowering the 5th note, D by half step.
