Personla preference and style of music...

If you're playing something floaty and poppy then a light pick maybe better but if it's rock then a heavy hard pick...

But it really comes down to your own favoured pick as you'll learn to play lightly and heavily with it

Different thickness picks will give you a different sound when picking, a thicker pick can help you having a more harsh attack on the strings. Some dont like the feel of playing with heavy picks though- so go down o the store and buy a few different picks, then listen to what your hand and ears are telling you.

Generally go for the lighter pick when playing something that requires a lot of strumming. Other than that, heavier picks can do the job. This is relative.
