I was looking to get some new pickups for a Peavey Predator USA Strat copy, and was completely overwhelmed by the shear amount of options available. I'm looking for a SRV tone, but also some surf guitar and some David Gilmour type tone. I was looking at the GFS Premium Texas pickups, which are cheap ($63 a set, not bad) and have great reviews, but might hold off and get something a bit more expensive.

Heres some other ones I've been looking at:

Seymour Duncan SSL-1
DiMarzio Area 58 neck and middle, FastTrack 2 in the bridge for crunchier stuff.

So has anybody had any experience with these, or any BareKnuckle single coils?

A set of Bareknuckle Irish Tour Coils can get you any of these tones with the highest quality, best tone and less noise than any factory set of coils BUT they are handwound and therefore quite expensive...

You could also try the Fender Texas Special Coils or (if you want to go active) the EMG SA singlecoils (David Gilmour uses them)

Ya those BareKnuckles are quite expensive, 272 big ones be precise smile.gif Thats more than all the other upgrades I had planned, i.e. all the hardware... combined lool

I found some Cabrera Screamin' Blues pickups, which are clones of the Fender Texas Specials, for $120. Problem, is, they're only sold in Brazil. I do have some friends that live there but the shipping costs would negate any savings.

I was looking at the EMG DG-20,the David Gilmour prewired pickguard, but thats also quite expensive, $310... ouch.

The GFS pickups sound pretty good, my only concern is how reliable they are. Do you have any experience with them, Herr ZakkWylde?

Never tried those GFS pickups but judging from their price I can't see them being better than real DiMarzios or Duncans...

IMO the best bang for buck pickups are Tonerider...

You can get a set of 3 for about £60, they don't sound much off a SD or Dimarzio. I have a vintage set in my 80's Tokia strat and it sounds better than my early 70's fender..

Bareknuckle sound amazing but its the age old thing, your set up i only as good as your weakest link, no point having top of the range pickup's and an average guitar or amp...

Those Toneriders look pretty interesting, do you have any experience with the City Limits set?

Ya, I heard them on YouTube, very nice pickups. Bit pricey though, as I'm trying to build up a decent Strat for as little money as possible. The ToneRiders look like a great alternative.

No mate not tried the City Limits set I went for the Pure Vintage set.

They sound great, nice clean jangley tops (not harsh at all) and full thick mids but with defenition.

I think the city limits have a slighltly higher output and are better with overdrive.

I can fully recomend them and there pretty cheap too....

Tell you what if you don't like them I'll buy them off you (for a good price of corse tongue.gif)

Thank you everybody for your feedback, it has been very helpful. ToneRiders it shall be... Probably the City Limits set (need that SRV tone), but may change my mind and get the Pure Vintage smile.gif If they're not to my liking they're all yours Stratman79... for a good price of course wink.gif

If you want vintage tone, take a look at Kinman & Lollar pickups. The DM virtual vintage could also be a great option.
