The Sure SM58 you can't go wrong with. As indestructible as you could need for a mic, decent quality for practicing and won't break the bank.

It's quite expensive from there, but you can probably pick one up second hand cheaply on ebay. Although if it is too much then you could also get http://www.zzounds.com/item--SHUPG58 which is a cheaper model.

+1 for the Shure SM 58 (or a 57) for a great general purpose first mic. Used 58s for years in gigs and they are a good, all round, solid, good quality mic.

+1 for SM-58

But if you are on a tight budget I'm guessing the MS-58 could be for you, yes you heard me MS-58 laugh.gif

I think they make descent stuff. I got a Fame 4x12 cabinet with Celestion Vintage 30's in it and it sounds just great!

MS-58... I wonder where they get all their ideas from laugh.gif

For recording/putting through a pa vocals the SM58 is the default for just about everyone.

For recording amps/drums the SM57 is apparently better although its not as good as recording vocals with.

I haven't heard this or anything but the reviews say it's awesome. Its a USB mic for your computer, so you don't have to have another amp, just plug it in and turn up your comp speakers,

So, not sure if you have another amp to use already, but this could be a cheaper option for you if your just playing by yourself.

Blue has one called the SNOWBALL which I'm really thinking of trying out. It's $100 Cdn on ebay plus shipping though...

Now I have a question. I DO have another amp to use (my Peavey Rage 158) is there a good mic that uses
the 1/4" phono plug? or are most of them the 3 prong plugs? Or maybe should I just go with the USB mic?

Or get an XLR (3 prongs) to 1/4 inch lead... Can't say I've ever come across a pro quality mic that wasn't xlr but haven't yet seen/used the USBs.

One important bit for the Blue - it really needs a shockmount, and this is true of most mics. A Blue shock will probably cost around another 50USD.

Tony

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Nady-SP5-Mic-SpecialBuy-1-Get-2-Free?sku=277174

Check this deal out! Buy one Nady and get 2 free. The very well reviewed and apparently comparable (better in some cases) to the SM58's. 19.99
