And I somehow got to thinking, why are metal guitar strings called "strings" and not "wires"? I thought about it for a while, and I thought that maybe the original nylon/whatever-else guitar... things... would have been called strings, maybe the name just stuck? It seems to me that steel/copper/other metal guitar strings should actually be called wires... but I could be wrong! biggrin.gif Anyways, random thought of the day, I guess. What do you think?

WOW!!! Thats deep. laugh.gif
But no seriously in every aspect they should be called wires.
But then again why is it when two thing nearly collide it is called a near-miss? huh.gif

Exactly! I remember once hearing from some comedian:

"Why do they call it a near-miss? They should call it a near-hit! A near-miss is a collison"

Might've been George Carlin..

Yea tis a bit weird they call them strings, coz in the manufacturing process of them they call the steel thats used "music wire" blink.gif

Off topic, but one of my favourite "oxymoron" is "you need your hair cut badly!!"

I`d actually like it cut really well to be honest laugh.gif

OK let's check what wikipedia say about it biggrin.gif

QUOTE
WIRE
A wire is a single, usually cylindrical, elongated string of drawn metal. Wires are used to bear mechanical loads and to carry electricity and telecommunications signals. Standard sizes are determined by various wire gauges. The term wire is also used more loosely to refer to a bundle of such strands, as in 'multistranded wire', which is more correctly termed a cable.

STRING
Generally, string is a thin, flexible piece of rope or twine which is used to tie, bind, or hang other objects. String can be made from a variety of fibres.

STRINGS (MUSIC)
A string is the vibrating element which is the source of vibration in string instruments, such as the guitar, harp, piano, and members of the violin family. They are lengths of a flexible material kept under tension so that they may freely vibrate. Strings may be "plain" (consisting only of a single material, like steel, nylon, or gut) or they may have a core of one material with an overwinding of other materials to add mass so the string sounds the desired pitch, while keeping the string thin and flexible enough to play. Such strings are called "wound strings."

So, IMHO, the term STRING sounds better smile.gif

They used to be made out of silk and/or cat gut - wire was a recent development. Soooo, string sounds a little better when you are tallking about the stringy innards of felines I guess blink.gif

Well it started to get nervous when our neighbour called round a while ago and we started to talk about getting the kittens neutered by the vet. My neighbour very kindly offered to do them for free but with no anaesthetic blink.gif . He's also offered to do the puppy (when we get it) using his 'slam the metal door real hard' technique that he uses on his rams and goats ohmy.gif . (I spent a large part of the conversation sitting down with my legs crossed rolleyes.gif ohmy.gif .)

Kitten has been kind of nervous ever since - who says they don't understand a word we say unsure.gif wink.gif .

Cheers,
Tony
