Well I don't know if this is good or bad thing biggrin.gif I have of feeling that some players choose a style that just doesn't need higher level of techniqe...imagine B.B King doing the Mojo Oro series biggrin.gif

A very good point Darius! I find that some of the level 7 lessons push me beyond my comfort zone, which is a good thing. Although i do struggle playing some of them cleanly and accurately. That said, I have obviously found that this struggling helps the accuracy etc of slower pieces, so it's all good!!

I've done this lesson for the recent tapping challenge : https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/thabus...xtreme_tapping/ . I haven't submitted it for REC however because I hadn't practiced it sufficiently and wanted to improve before submitting. But I haven't practiced it since then and don't know if I'll be able to play it even at that level sad.gif. Here's the video:

I've also been practicing this lesson for quite a while : https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...soloing-lesson/ .

HOLY CRAP! that's about the most intelligent thing I can come up with after listening to that. That was awesome indeed! If you think that wasn't up to par then I want to play not up to par like you.... smile.gif I'd consider myself awesome if that were the case.

respect!

That was awesome man, keep going with it.
I haven't done anything higher than 7. I'm more of a rhyth guitarist than a lead guitarist so maybe you could do a rhythm lesson that is level 8 and I could have a go at it biggrin.gif

LOL! me to Patrik! laugh.gif

Most of the lessons I learn are between 5-7. I might try something in the 8 level range for the next one and lock myself in the guitar room for awhile. biggrin.gif

Whatever Joe... You prolly eat 8's for breakfast. wink.gif

QUOTE (Spock @ Jul 19 2013, 04:21 AM) *
If I could do what you just did, I would be able to retire and say - I've met all my goals. At my rate, if arthritis doesn't get me first, I may have that by the time I'm 120 or so.

The highest level I've worked on is 6 - and I really should go back and continue with it. It was more difficult for me because I was using a baritone guitar, because that was what Cosmin was using, I may have a bit more success utilizing my drop tune pedal, but the speed of the changes met with immediate bends, was what ultimately frustrated me to go back to level 2.

In all honesty, I have not been practicing the lessons recently, though I know I should, but will eventually. Recently I've been more dedicated to working on my own stuff and attempting to define a style for myself - I know, I'm putting the cart before the horse; but I have to do the things that make it most enjoyable for me in order to stay motivated to continue to progress.

Plus, I have this strange disease that when I hit the record button, my fingers do everything except what they're supposed to do. I think what it is, is that I am more forgiving of myself when not recording, but when recording I want perfection, and when I think about it, I have NEVER played anything perfectly in my entire life, so perfection is not really even a goal of mine.

Did I write this word for word??? huh.gif

I'm with you.... playing at your level doesn't mean you are a bad guitarist. I'm not really a Clapton fan, but he does have the nick name "Slow Hand" if I remember correctly. Anyhow, he plays what he likes, or at least I assume he does. Go on and work on defining your own style, nothing wrong with that, plus it will help you decide where you want/need to be in order to achieve it. P

I'm not sure that trying to gauge yourself by the lesson difficulty should necessarily count towards your success of playing a guitar.....unless of course your goal is to play what is in that 1st or even 10th level lesson. If that were the case, then would Eric Clapton be famous if he gauged himself against some of these monster lessons? Don't get me wrong.... I love watching these guys play this stuff... it's amazing and I love every bit of it, but I also don't gauge myself against any lesson here. I try to do my own creative thing in my playing and if I achieve something that everyone likes and sounds cool thats great, but if not.... I still enjoyed my go at it just the same. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. That's like Michael Anglo Batio.... I'd love to rip apart four guitar necks like that guy, but where are his famous melodic songs? I mean he is a beast, but that's what he likes and trust me I fall into a stupor watching him, but that isn't for me. Not that I'd reject that ability if someone came up to me with a magic wand and said here ya go, one hit from this and you'll play like Batio... I'd be all over that. biggrin.gif

Anyhow, point being... I don't know that the true gauge would be playing any single lesson note for note.... unless that's just what you want. I think that we really need a "Creative Rec" section where you listen to a lesson and become inspired to do your version of it based on the style. That's what a lot of the lessons are based on are they not? A lesson in the style of??? So why not have a Rec Take section where we can be creative and judged on that part of it?

Anywho, that's my two cents and also why I don't have a rec take. I actually get bored trying to learn other songs or music that someone else has already done.... but I do like the collabs, that's where the creative side gets to come out.

Ok, let me qualify this and clear this up... I didn't say bored in the sense that I can just play anything, but bored that it may take me awhile to hit every note that someone else already played, when I may be able to listen to it and come up with something in the same style of on my own. It's more natural for me and it is making me use my creative side so no room for me to get bored with my playing. I'm not saying it's a good take, but that's why it'd be nice to get feed back on a creative rec take.

Sorry Darius, no disrespect or argument implied here. I know where you are coming from, I'm just agreeing with Spock in a long winded message with a lot of words. laugh.gif

Ok, nuff of that rant. wink.gif

Learning things that someone has already done/ played, can be a great source of inspiration and can help you amass a huge quantity of information. I am living this experience with the Pantera tribute band - I am currently in the middle of a lengthy process of learning 14 Pantera songs, note for note and it feels awesome, plus, it works my chops big time!

I had a blast onstage this Sunday, performing I'm broken and Cowboys from hell and I felt how much all that practice payed off, when I was able to pull things off when people were flying around me, doing pogo, jumping and crowd surfing!

No worries biggrin.gif Didn't felt offended smile.gif)) I get Your point and I think that Your concept is good but I would rather call it "Students Originals" where You could name the lesson if any particular was an inspiration smile.gif

Indeed sir, indeed. I agree that learning someone else's originals note for note is a good thing. I just tend to find myself trailing off after a bit as I prefer the creative side to keep myself from getting bored.

I guess my main point was just don't get too wrapped up in any single lesson or any other works by anyone else to the point where you may feel that judgement of your own playing should be against that of another musician. Variety is what makes the world turn, and if you play some slow calculated notes that really reach out to the listener....., that can be just as good as watching Batio playing 4 necks at lightning speed.

If you are in a tribute band then you will certainly be judged harshly by fans watching you play if you don't play something note for note... If you are labeled as a tribute band, then that's what the fans came to see, they don't want anyone's original stuff added to any of Dime's awesomeness.... I sure wouldn't smile.gif

So again, that's all I was trying to get at, maybe playing an 8, 9 or 10 level lesson isn't the goal of some people. Perhaps they are merely looking for inspiration.... and there's not a place better than GMC to get that for sure.

You guys are all awesome musicians and if I could magically play like any one of you.... I'd certainly jump on it!!!

Now if you'll excuse me... I'm off to learn this Vito Bratta lesson note for note, or until I trail off..... again. laugh.gif

Mark, don't be too harsh on yourself man - the last recording you have sent is really good (I came back to listen to it a few times - which means I really like it smile.gif )

Of course, for me, performing in Domination is a great drill and experience and gosh darn it, learning 14 Pantera songs is nothing short of great practicing, but I always get back to my old musical self whenever I am not doing any Domination related stuff. It is very important to be able to fill in for the job and stay true to who you are as a musician.

Now, I like Pantera a lot and I resonate to that music, so it's not far at all from who I am. Just keep going on your path and nothing will go wrong as long as you don't become obsessed with becoming someone else wink.gif
