Hi!

I just heard that my friend got his finger cut off, and he is at the hospital now and he is problably going to be okey,
But is he ever going to be able to play guitar/Drums again, I ask since that's what he love to do and because we where trying to start a Band together, And he wouldn't be able to that with a disfuctional finger, would he?

I hope for his best and actually I should be on the hospital right now to check on him. But, I can't :S

Best wishes for his recovery.

edit: guitar is also possible of course. there have been a few great gypsy jazz guitarists with only 3 fingers on their fretting hand(thumb, index, middle)

Oh sorry to hear of your friends accident.
First I'd say it depends on which finger and which hand but in either case I'm confident that with the right will, your friend will manage.
Send him GMC's regards.

Hell the dude in Def Leppard only has one arm and plays drums just fine. And as long as he didn't get his thumb chopped, then he should be able to play guitar fine with 4 fingers, especially if it is his picking hand.

How was his finger severed? Did they find it, take it to the hospital, reattach it? I hope he is ok, but I love a good severed digit story.

I'm sorry because of your friend man. Say hello for him, and give him some encouragement about playing too. DOn't tell him nothing right away since maybe he is suffering mentally too, but in time try to draw him to guitar or drums . He can definitely play, many people have developed very original styles just because of their finger missing. Brain starts to act and try different things on guitar, the ones normal guitarist or drummer don't really do.

Good to hear your friend got his finger back smile.gif

That said, there are lots of famous musicians with missing fingers or hands. Other than the ones mentioned...

Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead was missing his middle finger on the right hand

The great Django Reinhardt himself had his third and fourth fingers on his left hand partially paralyzed most of his life.

Paul Wittgenstein lost his right arm in World War I, right after his debut as a concert pianist. After the war, he continued to play, using only his left arm, rearranging pieces for one hand, and lots of composers -- Ravel, Prokofiev, Hindemith, Korngold, Richard Strauss -- wrote pieces dedicated to him. Of course, it takes a bit more to become famous on the guitar if you lost one of your hands. Still not impossible to play, though wink.gif
