Who do you think is better?
Posted by: Stevie·Ray·Vaughn May 3 2008, 09:47 PM
Can't say I listen to either of them very much, but from what I've heard, I like Firewind better
Posted by: Eat-Sleep-andJam May 3 2008, 09:52 PM
Ill say FireWind soley based on the guitarist ........
I cant stand Dragonforce.
Its really preference though
Posted by: Fsgdjv May 3 2008, 09:57 PM
Since I haven't heard Firewind, I pick them! At least I don't dislike them
Posted by: shellshock1911 May 3 2008, 09:57 PM
I don't know really. I bash Herman Li and Dragonforce all the time for their total crap live performances, but no band gets me so hyped up and uplifted as Dragonforce, so I think they are great musicians, but just decent guitarists. I think Firewind has better guitarists though.

personally i have to go with him I dont bash them or anything but after Dragonforce being in guitar hero 3 and then having people that here the song once and know nothing about the band or anything and then there their favorite band just put me off but I love Firewind I actually just learned the opening to Mercenary Man(slowly because I'm a beginner) but I was woundering that after learning it. Alot of people I know like Dragonforce but I really like Firewind and I think the whole world should know about them(even though a dragonforce effect might happen)

I don't know why everybody hates on DragonForce so much. They were probably all stoned out of their minds during the live performances. They sound just fine in the video below.

see the thing is firewind is probobly not getting "stoned out of there mind though" im not saying i hate Dragonforce either there really good better than alot of people you hear on the radio(which I havent heard either band on the radio) and in this lesson there not even live so this was probobly rehersed and they probobly recorded a couple of times

I've never heard Firewind so I guess I'll have to be checking them out
Posted by: The Uncreator May 3 2008, 11:52 PM
I love both bands, But Gus G. Is just too insane a musician. Firewind for me
Posted by: OrganisedConfusion May 3 2008, 11:58 PM
That's like choosing between being shot to death and stabbed to death Either way it's a bad outcome
But if I have to say one or the other I guess Firewind is slightly better.

more like being shot to death vs winning a free pizza for life contest.. .. lets compare
Dragonforce has Herman Li on Lead
Firewind has Gus G..
Gus G can do everything Herman Li can.. cleaner.. Faster and all around better.. also his stuff sounds a hell of alot better
My Vote goes for Gus G
Dragon Force has Sam
Firewind again.. has Gus G on rythm.. so.. Gus G wins again
since we are guitarists and don't care about other instruments i will say this.. dragonforces keys are more extreme but imo less musical.. Dragonforce's singer sucks compared to Firewinds epic Vocals.. and the drumming in Firewind is more complex then the speedy double kick in dragonforce ( see song warrior to understand ).
Firewind is just all around a better band.. i would choose Allegience over Inhuman Rampage anyday

I like firewind better, but Dragonforce got some kickass songs too
Posted by: TreyDeschamp May 4 2008, 01:02 AM
When I first discovered Dragonforce I thought Herman Li was awsome and he still is but Gus G. is 10x more awsome then herman

How can you say Gus G. is better than Herman Li? He's nowhere close to being Asian
. To be honest I think Gus G. just plays so much slower, that's why you think his sound is cleaner. However, I haven't really listened to much Firewind so maybe I'm missing the mega shred stuff.
I can hardly comment on who I like better because I've only heard DragonForce's stuff. Having said that, I've youtubed some Firewind songs and the solos just don't blow me away like Herman's do. Everything else sounds fine and cool and what not, but I listen to DragonForce when I need some shred.

really whoever hasn't listened to firewind needs to listen to them

First off, Herman Li isnt playing as fast as you think he is, Its fast, But not REALLY that fast. Secondly, Speed isnt everything, a slower cleaner solo played well, is better than a fast one played bad. Thirdly, He can play fast, quite fast. Check out some of his other previous projects like Dream Evil, and Mystic Prophecy
Most here know Herman Li, but some might not know Gus... So......

Thats really funny because I was just thinking about that! It is better to play slower than cleaner than faster and sloppy.
I'm not putting Herman Li down at all I'm just saying that I think Gus G's stuff sounds better

I love Firewind! Regarding Dragonforce... It's becoming a little boring after a while. I don't mind listening to them when they show up on my playlist, but I don't press repeat like I do when Firewind turn up ^^
I also like Firewind better because Gus G is one of my heroes ^^

Herman Li is definitely playing faster than Gus was if we're comparing video's here. I totally agree with you that speed isn't everything, but when I play my DragonForce all I care about is the speed. I play it for the shred.
I watched the entire video that you posted and I did like it. I enjoyed it all. Having said that, I love the arrangement of Herman's solos. They really turn me on.
I think that I will legally obtain some Firewind songs because I have liked all the one's that I've heard on youtube. But Herman Li is still the shiz in my book.
How can you hate on this?

They're both good but nothing Gus has done has really blown me away before. I think dragonforce have great melody which is what's important to me so they get my vote.

I will not take it personally!
Just kidding. Gus is actually my name. But the more and more I hear Gus G, I like it. He climbed very fast in my ranking of favorite guitarists.
About Herman Li, I first knew about him seeing an Ibanez demonstration video and he is really impressive, but IMHO he kind of overuse full speed. However , his new signature model really has the coolest pickup setup ever!

Man, what specs and looking! I have to put my hands on one of those...

Never really listened them, but judging by the lessons that we have here on GMC I would say that Firewind ( Joe's lesson )

Firewind.....no comparison, they write amazing songs, and Gus G can play anything, he has parts that remind me of George Lynch, some parts that remind me of Yngwie and some blazing solo's that If I attempted would make my fingers drop off!! Dragonforce, IMO are a terrible band, the 2 guitarists are REAL bad, Herman is better than Sam, but thats like saying rabbit droppings taste nicer than bird crap!! Herman's sweep lesson is a joke!!
Gus G is possibly the greatest guitarist around, he sometimes doesnt show his true lead potential as he will be firing out some insane heavy rhythm, but his lead work is truly awesome and composition-wise he is a genius!! I love the way he can go from a heavy, sick rhythm to a slow, melodic chordal passage then use a slow, melodic solo to set the scene but then rip from the slow melodic solo into a screaming million notes a second uber-solo!!
Gus G Rocks!!!

I would pick Dragonforce, just for the sake of everyone hating them for there talent. Yea, most of there songs sounds the same, but for the actual good songs they have on 3 of there albums, It blows away most of the Power Metal competition.
I listened to Mercenary Man... not impressed one bit. It was just boring. The typical melodic intro, its like c mon, you know how many bands have done that? At least put something blistering on the background to keep things on a mediocre level. Blah, power metal is not my forte but I would rather choose the annoying background of Dragonforce and there 5 good songs on there entire career than to a truckload of Firewind disco for free.

I think is a matter of taste...I prefer Firewind...check the Joe's lesson about firewind...is a must practice!
