A rack preamp with four tubes in it might be expected to make a pinch more hiss than a solid state tube screamerish bit. Many modellers just can't help but add some noise when trying to emulate a tube. What makes this spiff is having 4 actual preamp tubes and not having it generate any hiss. The soldano version on my 11 rack certainly requires a noise gate. I'd forgotten how silent this guy makes these units. It's really top notch work.
I didn't get on well with the Marshall JCM clone. It just wasn't for me. Not to say it's not great, it's just not my thing. I'm sure it will make somebody really happy
My 11 rack has one fx loop and that's how I patch in the soldano clone. I turn off the "amp" block and turn on the fx loop block and bam, instant tube tone that sounds like a Soldano. As much as I tried I can't get my 11 rack soldano to have the same thickness/response/timbre as the mysanikov. It's just not possible. I'm mr "software guy" but somtimes you need the steel

My experience with using pedals as preamp is similar, boosting a dist. pedal without going overboard I usually didn't need a noisegate. Some amps though uses very soft-clipping on first/second level of gain staging (to get a better low-gain sound) so that might be the answer.
Also why no love for the marshall (jcm800?), I imagine its a bit more work to get the soldano type sound from it (pre-boost, post eq etc.) but could be a cool companion for double tracking as they can really make the sound huge.
