Is Rock Back, all thanks to a game!?!?!?! :O

Dec 6 2008, 02:37 AM	GMC:er Posts: 598 Joined: 7-December 06	since the 90s hip-hop and rap have pretty much taken over in population for young kids and i know becuz ive had to move around a lot and been to several schools and only like 20%liked rock and it was only half alternative the rest was hip-hop and rap! Now years later Metal/Rock is making a comeback w/ one game sparking many dreams for years to come! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRJRoBrBLkc im only 16 btw and have noticed many young kids in my family have asked me how it was like being in a band trying to live the dream. The only reason why Metal is out there right now is because MTV found a way to dumb down metal and water it down like what they did to Nu Metal in the 90's. I havent really found out any "original sounding" band in Guitar Hero aside from the popular past and present artist in its arsenal so I dont really know what you mean by "bring rock back" since all its doing is mimicking the greatest hits of these popular artist. If Guitar Hero is bringing Rock and Metal back, then I'm not seeing it since its the same people thats been listening to Rock and Metal thats playing the game. So what anyway? What makes Rock and Metal so almighty that everyone must listen to it or they would be branded with ignorance for not liking chord progressions and distortions. It makes it easier for me to teach a student something I've played for years rather than learning new stuff I am not necessarily into. So many kids now days get exposed to music from very limited sources. Radio, tv and friends. Kids by nature want the newest and greatest. I'm talking from first hand experience. My son who will be turning 13 this month only listened to what his friends exposed him to and what he heard on the radio (country, hip hop, pop, etc.) Nickleback was a rock band for him. Now, he would hear the stuff I would be playing on my guitar and he loved Crazy Train by Ozzy but I think that was in part to hearing in on TV during football games etc. But, could really care less. I was just his old man playing random chords for all he knew. This all changed when he started playing guitar hero at a friends. Pretty soon he'd be asking me if I could play this song or that song. I was totally shocked when I was playing Seek and Destroy and he started to sing the lyrics. Blew me away. I've always listened to hard rock, metal my whole life. However, my son never wanted to listen with me. Now, he'll be like "hey dad wanna listen to AC/DC or Dragon Force." Now I think that's cool! Guitar hero doesent really expose people to any New artists, just Classic rock and metal. Todays most forward thinking and progressive bands would NEVER get featured, unfortunatly. The culture and society has changed a bit since these songs were actually made, and then they served to communicate a message to the audience. A message to freedom, message of Rock&Roll way of like and all that goes with it. It was a rebellion message to free yourself from authoritative way of thinking that was predominant during '50s and before. Guitar Hero game phenomenon is now here for quite different purposes. It is not made to continue spreading this message, but to make rock tunes a sell out product of today. Something that will now be "in" and tomorrow just as easy "out". GH will be outdated tomorrow, because it is a simplified product made for the masses just to make them fun. There is no background story or some kind of a strong symbolic belief that can make a lot of people identify with it for long periods of time, like they could do with rock music, just shallow emulation of guitar playing using 5 button controller, and tv screen. The only thing that GH has in common with rock music are the actual tunes and that is where all the connection with true Rock&Roll culture disappears. I can play Thunderhorse on guitar but only barely get through it on expert on GH. Regardless of all that I hate people who argue between real guitar and GH, I mean for christ sake it's a game. If you look at the history of metal, it all comes in waves. As soon as one wave becomes popular and commercialized, another is brewing in the streets. A perfect example of this is Thrash emerging to bring down Glam in the 80's. Although we have much more genre's today, the same thing is happening. Young bands that grew up on Metallica and Slayer are calling out bands like In Flames and Trivium with their modern version of Thrash. anyway, I enjoy Guitar Hero and Rock Band but the effect it's having on people is kind of pissing me off. All of a sudden we have a millions of people thinking they are rockers and love metal/rock, but really know nothing about it. It seems to me like people are used to being fed music by the radio and MTV that they don't really explore the genre and its culture. My band just auditioned a guitar player that got into music through Guitar Hero. We had to turn him down because he was only into bands that were in the games. We asked him to play some Thrash standards and he looked completely lost... how can you audition for a thrash band and not know Whiplash?!
